Alberto El Patron Debuts on Lucha Underground

IMG_1863

Did you catch the recent edition of Lucha Underground? Did you see the final minute when the former Alberto Del Rio (I promise I’ll try to call him Alberto El Patron more) entered Dario Cueto’s office in his first appearance on Lucha Underground programming? I’m stoked about it! I hope you are, too.

If you don’t watch Lucha Underground and are wondering what all of the hype is about then check out this really short highlight video of the past episode. There’s a cinematic feel to this wrestling show that you’re just not going to get anywhere else. Also, Alberto El Patron is there at the end! So click and watch, you won’t be disappointed…

Jim Ross on Royal Rumble, Alberto El Patron

Here’s another one of those pieces I do where I take recent comments from Jim Ross and I throw my opinion in as well. Check out JR’s blog at JRsBarBQ.com. You can also order JR’s BBQ products online at WWEShop.com.

J.R. on Brock Lesnar and this Sunday’s Royal Rumble PPV: “After all this speculation wouldn’t it be interesting if Lesnar retains Sunday in Philly and then headlines WM31 against either Bryan or Reigns? Lots of balls in the air it seems which keepr many fans like me on our toes trying to figure out what’s going on. I’ve found that it’s much easier to simply not over think these matters and just enjoy the events as they happen and then evaluate what one has seen.”

It’s always exciting when there isn’t a clear outcome to big matches like these. I have no idea who I’d pick to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match. I feel like Lesnar or Rollins will walk out with the belt but it’s never a done deal that Cena won’t win. I’m excited about this Sunday.

J.R. on the “Road to WrestleMania”: “The Rumble has the potential to really jump start the Road to WrestleMania and I’m anxious to enjoy it on the WWE Network. This is a great opportunity for WWE to get people talking about the Royal Rumble which in turn helps promote WM31.”

Who wins the Rumble? Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan seem to have the most buzz, but depending on who wins the WWE title match then many other wrestlers become stronger candidates. If Cena wins, Rusev could realistically win the Rumble. If Rollins wins, Dean Ambrose could easily win as well. And if the WWE title match goes on first, can the losers of that match compete in the Rumble? Could Rollins lose the match, fail to cash in, then go on to defeat 29 other wrestlers for one more chance at the title? I’m definitely over thinking it at this point.

J.R. on Alberto El Patron’s Lucha Underground debut: “Saw Where Alberto El Patron made his debut on Lucha Underground which seems to be a good ‘get’ for the fledging promotion.”

Lucha Underground has proven it’s quality in it’s short history. Now that the former Alberto Del Rio is with them I’m all the more excited to tune in every week. As a former World Champion in WWE he’s got massive credibility to bring to their product.

Del Rio Was Justified

by: Mitch Nickelson

The big wrestling news, highlighted by Mr. Jaxson on this very site yesterday, is that Alberto Del Rio (his real name is Al Rodriguez) was abruptly fired after a backstage altercation. The initial report was that Del Rio slapped someone in the social media department. He didn’t hit another actual wrestler. He didn’t hit Brock Lesnar or someone who’s a legit fighter that could hold their own. So, Alberto is obviously the bad guy in this situation, right?

A day later and we’re starting to have actual details to form our opinions on. Granted, these could still be rumors so it’s advised to take this info with a grain of salt. But here are some details and they don’t make Alberto look like quite so bad of a guy.

According to f4wonline.com

Based on sketchy stories and what wrestlers have been talking about, at catering, somebody asked the person to clean off his plate.  The person joked something along the lines of how that’s Del Rio’s job.  Del Rio found out and confronted him.  As the story goes, he  didn’t apologize and then smiled at him, and Del Rio slapped him.

Del Rio should have hit the guy twice. (Not really, but he’s still a tool.)

Seriously, this Social Media Manager basically says a racist comment about Del Rio behind his back and when he was confronted about it, he got all smug and refused to say sorry. I take the smiling comment to mean that the guy laughed in his face, which is probably what it felt like for Alberto.

The still-employed Social Media Manager, who doesn’t view it as wrong with stereotyping Hispanic people as the ‘hired help,’ didn’t see anything childish at all about these comments that were posted on WWE’s official twitter account today…

Maybe I’m jumping to conclusions to think that the Social Media Manager, whomever he is, wrote these tweets. But if the ‘manager’ part of his name is a truthful title then they at least are a product of the department that he runs. It seems awfully childish to me that someone who’s vital to the PR of a publicly traded company would use their outlets to smear a man who simply was putting a racist in their place.

I realize I’m forming a very harsh opinion of a person that might truly be a victim. But with all of the info that’s coming out of the dirt sheets, weighed with the reactions that are being blasted from WWE’s social media, the victim/bully roles don’t seem so clear. Sure, violence is never the answer and Del Rio should have never hit the guy. But the man who received the slap is not so innocent. I don’t agree with Del Rio’s handling of the situation but I think his emotions that lead to it might be understandable.

WWE, want to end that H8 that you want none of? Want to be a star? Then get rid of the chumps in your company and not the ones who stand up to them.

That’s easily the harshest opinion piece I’ve ever written about pro-wrestling. Agree with me? Think I’m wrong? Comment below or send your love/hate to @MitchNickelson on twitter. Thanks for reading.

Alberto Del Rio Fired From WWE

by: Al N. Jaxson

Well here’s some sad news to your Thursday if you’re an Alberto Del Rio fan. He was officially released from the WWE today. I’m not gonna go into why he was let go, but instead go over how much Del Rio really brought to the table.

He was no doubt one of the best in ring competitors in the Business. An Alberto Del Rio match was always entertaining. He could put on a good match with pretty much anybody and let’s not forget that Del Rio was a WWE Champion.

I feel like he was pushed down the ladder way too fast. You have guys like Randy Orton, Daniel Bryan, Roman Reigns, Kane, and a few others who were certainly no better than Del Rio as far as character, mic skills, and in ring skills.

WWE lost one of the best today. On behalf of me and Mitch and all your fans, We’ll miss you Alberto.

Main Event Review For August 5th, 2014

by: Mitch Nickelson

Live on the WWE Network, this is Main Event! The show is happening in Laredo, Texas this week. AJ Lee is advertised to be on tonight. Other than her appearance, I’m unaware of anything advertised for this weeks show.

I recap the show and insert my opinion along the way. I usually just give brief summaries and highlights of each segment, but will occasionally do some in-depth play-by-play if I’m compelled. Here we go.

Del Rio Has A Mexican Flag; Swagger Has An American Flag

Alberto Del Rio comes to the ring first, proudly waving his Mexican flag. Maybe he’s making a last minute pitch to put Mexico into that Flag Match at Summerslam. Del Rio grabs a mic and says that since he’s a few miles away from Mexico, he’ll talk in Spanish. I don’t know Spanish, so this part of the review is really easy for me. He ends his promo by thanking the fans for their support for all the years, in English.

The Real American music hits as Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter come to the ring. Zeb grabs a mic and tells Del Rio that he didn’t understand a word he was saying. We speak English, Zeb says. He might as well be in another country, like Russia. Del Rio says that this is a good place to have a fight. Zeb accepts the challenge and says that Del Rio reminds him of Rusev. Zeb gets the crowd to do the “We The People” chant to close out that segment, even though they are very partisan for Del Rio.

AJ Lee will make her return tonight. She was injured last week at the hands of Paige, who knocked her off the ramp at the top of the entryway and caused her to suffer whiplash. We’ll also get a recap of Stephanie on Raw last night, which is not a surprising sentence to type.

The opening promo set up a match between Swagger and Del Rio for later in the show. The crowd is way into Del Rio, so it should be good.

Standing in the ring right now is none other than SLATER GATOR! Even though it was a fluke, Heath had a huge win over Seth Rollins on Raw last night. Will that momentum carry over to tonight? Also, the announcers said “Slater and the Gator” again. I’m pretty sure that is wrong.

Slater has a mic and asks the crowd if they saw his win last night. They replayed it and it was beautiful. Heath is celebrating like a rock star. He stumbles over his words a little and Titus shoves him because he’s annoyed. These two face Goldust and Stardust right now.

Slater Gator vs. Goldust & Stardust

The crowd starts off with chants for Goldust and they seem to be in that corner. The match was good, nothing great. It kept a good pace and the Dusts got to show off their odd personalities. The finish came when Slater was trying to roll up Goldust but was having trouble. Teamwork came in the form of a boot by Titus O’Neil to knock Goldust over. Slater was able to pin his opponent to continue one of the best weeks Heath Slater has had in a long while.

Winners by pinfall: Slater Gator

Titus actually is looking happy a little after the win. Well, until Slater tries to jump into his arms to celebrate and The Gator shoves him off. Slater keeps trying to jump on him and Titus continues to be annoyed by him. These guys are great. Make a t-shirt for them so I can buy it, WWE.

Raw recap time and we see the contract signing by Stephanie McMahon and Brie Bella from last night. They’re fighting at Summerslam, of course. AJ Lee is up next.

AJ Lee vs. Summer Rae

Summer comes out first. The announcers reference Summer’s angle with Fandango, which is surprising to still be happening. AJ comes out next with her Diva’s Championship. They replay the spill she took on Smackdown thanks to Paige.

Faint “CM Punk” chants at the start of the show. AJ had to pause about a minute into the match because she was selling her whiplash injury. Summer capitalized on this and gained control of the match. While the announcers were about to tell us about the glorious news that #SlaterGator is trending on twitter, AJ applies her Black Widow submission to force Summer to tap out.

Winner by submission: AJ Lee

AJ Lee Tells A Fairy Tale; Paige Interrupts

Tom Phillips enters the ring to ask AJ Lee about her upcoming match against Paige. AJ told a fairy tale about a girl who dreamed of becoming a queen by winning the Diva’s Title. Then, a dark witch stole it from her. But, she says that sometimes you have to be your own white knight. So she came back, took what belonged to her, and ruined Paige’s little fairy tale. At Summerslam, she will do the exact same thing.

Paige’s music hits and she is standing at the top of the ramp. She tells AJ that she’s thrilled to see her back on her feet again. She tells AJ that she can be that white knight. They belong together in that ring at Summerslam because she respects and loves her. They’re frienemies. When Paige takes her title at Summerslam, she still wants to be AJ’s friend because this is a great story.

AJ says she likes Paige’s style but Paige won’t like how this story ends. This isn’t Paige’s house, this is AJ’s kingdom. The crowd cheers for her as her music hits. Good promo by these two. Hopefully they get that good match at Summerslam that that I’m expecting from them.

Swagger vs. Del Rio is still up later. Next is John Cena/Brock Lesnar recap stuff. Next Monday on Raw is Hulk Hogan’s birthday celebration with “special surprise guests.” Did you read my news piece on TJRWrestling about the speculation that it could turn into an NWO reunion? It’s a quick one if you haven’t, so check it out here.

That really great video that detailed the history between Lesnar and Cena is played now. It’s so good, but I’m sure most people know that by now. That video is a great way to keep people excited for the match even though both guys are off WWE programming this week.

Jack Swagger (w/Zeb Colter) vs. Alberto Del Rio

Colter and Swagger come out first. This will probably be the coldest audience they’ve seen in a while. This match should be interesting.

There’s a break and when they come back they say that Dean Ambrose will be on Smackdown this Thursday. He’ll reveal his decision of what the stipulation will be in his match with Seth Rollins. Can’t pick Flag Match, Dean. That one is taken.

Del Rio comes out with his flag and the announcers point out that this largely Hispanic audience is like a homecoming for Del Rio. They really like him in Laredo.

Swagger had his ribs taped up, selling the attack from Rusev the night before. Loud “Del Rio” chants start the match. Del Rio targets those injured ribs and keeps giving Swagger some stiff kicks to them over and over.

Del Rio applies the Cross Armbreaker to Swagger over the ropes later in the match. He goes to the top rope, but Swagger crotches him. Swagger then applies a Superplex and remembers to sell his rib injury. He goes for the pin and the crowd pops a little when Del Rio kicks out. Swagger makes a come back and connects with the Swagger Bomb. He attempts a pin again, and again the crowd pops when Del Rio kicks out.

The two trade punches in the corner and Del Rio hits a Tornado DDT from the corner. Pin by Alberto, but Jack kicks out. Del Rio goes for the Cross Armbreaker in the middle of the ring, but Swagger counters it into a slam. Pin again, but fails. Del Rio is able to hit a backbreaker then follow it up with a kick to Swagger, who is on his knees at this point. He pins and Swagger somehow kicks out at two.

Del Rio goes for a Cross Armbreaker in the middle of the ring and he connects with it this time. He locks it in and somehow Swagger counters it into the Patriot Lock. Del Rio gets out of it quickly. Swagger is in the corner and Del Rio tries to kick him in the head off of the second rope, but Swagger does one heck of a catch and puts the kicking leg into the Patriot Lock. Del Rio tries desperately to crawl to the ropes but Swagger pulls with all of his might to keep him from grabbing them. The crowd is pretty loud in favor of Del Rio at this point, but he’s forced to tap out.

Winner by submission: Jack Swagger

Swagger and Colter stand with Old Glory in the middle of the ring to celebrate the win. They do a “We The People” chant as the show closes.

Mitch’s Final Thoughts:

What a great main event. It was odd because of how much the crowd wanted to cheer for the heel Del Rio. Swagger wasn’t necessarily booed, but he clearly wasn’t the favorite. Regardless, that was a very above average match and a real treat to watch. Do one of these every week, WWE.

Slater Gator are funny, so I’m glad they were on the show. Their match with Goldust & Stardust wasn’t anything special, but they were able to get a win and time with a mic. I’ll take it. AJ’s match wasn’t anything special either, but her promo with Paige was one of the better verbal bouts they’ve had with each other. It’s taken a while for the Paige heel character to get where she needed to be, but she seems like she’s arrived recently. This was a good promo and I feel like the two women are at the point where their story is starting to click.

There were only two recap segments this week. One was the Stephanie McMahon stuff. Even though she’s on WWE programming way too much, she’s at least fantastic at what she does. The other recap segment was the Cena/Lesnar video replay, which you won’t hear me complain about anytime soon.

This was another above average Main Event. As long as there is one solid match (preferably whatever goes on last) and the rest is kept to a digestible amount then I’m happy. This show had one great match, one great promo, and filler that was called Slater Gator. This was a great hour of wrestling.

Main Event Review for July 8th, 2014

Main Event

Welcome back to Mitch Nickelson’s review of your favorite subscription-exclusive Tuesday night professional wrestling show. I, of course, am Mitch Nickelson. I am always thankful that you would not only watch this show but you would also read my lovely blend of recap and opinion.

This week looks to be another solid hour, as Main Event usually is. Chris Jericho is advertised to be on the show. He’ll be conducting his always-entertaining interview segment, The Highlight Reel. His guest is supposed to be WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart. That’s some star power right there.

Also advertised is a U.S. Championship match between Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio. While it does feel like we’ve had that match more than a few times recently, tonight is guaranteed to be different. Joey Styles announced via Twitter earlier in the day that tonight’s bout will be a Last Man Standing match. It might just get brutal between these two. This is a free preview week for the WWE Network. Maybe the show tonight will be just slightly more special.

Live from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, this is Main Event. Tom Phillips and Byron Saxton are our announcers.

United States Championship Match
Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio
Last Man Standing Match

Sheamus comes out first and grabs a microphone. He says that he won’t need the luck of the Irish to beat Del Rio. When he gets to Battleground, he plans on being the first man since Edge to carry both the Intercontinental and US titles. Del Rio cuts him off from the big screen. Del Rio says that if anyone is going to be unifying the titles, it’ll be him. Sheamus tells him that anything goes tonight, including kendo sticks, chairs, and tables. They both banter and Del Rio finally decides to come out to start this match.

When Del Rio gets announced, he gets a hearty boo. Sheamus gets applauded. The belt is held up as the two start pummeling each other. Sheamus throws Del Rio into a barricade. The ref starts counting and only gets to two. It’d be funny if that was all it took.

Sheamus ripped off the announce table cover and threw it at Del Rio. He did his Rolling Senton to him on the outside. Del Rio finds a kendo stick and wails on Sheamus as they go to a break.

Back from the break and Sheamus looks hurt in the ring. During the break, Del Rio hit his opponent with a diving kendo strike from the top rope. He does it again. He continues to use the stick, driving it into Sheamus’ ribs. He goes for another strike off the top rope, but Sheamus deflects it.

The two trade shots and Sheamus starts to gain the advantage. He hits Del Rio with the Irish Curse Backbreaker. He gets counted up to seven on that. Sheamus grabs the kendo stick and Del Rio begs him not to use it. Sheamus does, however. Several strikes and Del Rio is grounded again. The crowd chants “We want tables” while Del Rio gets another seven count.

Del Rio connects with a big DDT and now Sheamus gets a count. Del Rio kicks him and also goes for a running kick, but finds himself receiving the Ten Beats of the Bowery. It was more like twenty, though. Poor Alberto. He gets counted on the outside and it goes to nine this time. We get another commercial break?

This commercial break is interesting because they’re advertising a Wrestlemania Rewind about CM Punk. I’m sure it was recorded and planned for air before he exited the company, but it’s sure to add to any speculation that might be out there.

Back from the second break in the first 20 minutes and the crowd is still chanting for tables. Sheamus rolls to the outside and grabs himself a chair. Before he can use it, Del Rio cuts him off with a kendo stick. Del Rio sees Sheamus dazed and still holding the chair up. He then does his kick, Van Daminator-style, to a kneeling Sheamus. Does that count as a chair shot to the head? I didn’t think WWE did those anymore.

Del Rio props up the chair into a corner. There’s a little exchange that ends with Del Rio’s knee into Sheamus’ stomach. Del Rio goes for a chair shot but Sheamus stop it with his bare hands. He slams Del Rio, then goes for the Brogue Kick. Del Rio avoids that and hits the Backstabber instead.

Del Rio went for another kick, no chair this time, but got hit with the White Noise instead. They both get counted but Sheamus gets back on his feet at eight. Sheamus finally grabs a table from under the ring and the crowd loves that. He sets it up near the corner.

Del Rio battled back and kicks Sheamus in the head in the corner. Count again that ends at eight. Del Rio attacks and rams his shoulder into the chair on the corner. He applies the cross arm breaker. Sheamus lifts him up by his arm that is still in a submission hold and drops Del Rio through the table he set up earlier. The ref goes for the count and almost counts them both out, but they both get up. Sheamus used his Brogue kick and Del Rio fails to get up after ten. Sheamus is the last man standing.

Winner and Still US Champion: Sheamus

Chris Jericho’s return segment with The Miz and Bray Wyatt is replayed. Tom Phillips said that he has breaking news as they announce that Chris Jericho will face off against Bray Wyatt at Battleground.

Renee Young Interviews Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho says that the WWE is more than just about flashing jackets and surprise returns, it’s about survival. He used the “along came a spider” line about Bray Wyatt and said that he crushes spiders. He talks about Bret Hart being on his Highlight Reel later in the show and says that WWE Main Event will never, ever, be the same again.

There’s a recap of last night’s main event on Raw, with Seth Rollins taking on WWE World Heavyweight Champion John Cena. Lots of interference and an almost cash-in. Good stuff. A graphic is shown for the Fatal 4-Way main event at Battleground.

Nikki Bella vs. Natalya, Naomi, Eva Marie, Cameron, Summer Rae, and Rosa Mendes

This is  a six on one handicap match. Poor Nikki. She looks sad in the ring with ring with her spikey baseball hat. Why is is spikey? She could use it as a weapon, I guess. She probably won’t. It sounded like Natalya got a decent pop, which makes sense because this is in Canada. Cameron wasn’t at ringside, which Tom and Byron point out.

There’s a pretty mean smack that Nikki did on Summer Rae that was worth pointing out. The more talented wrestlers, like Naomi and Natalya, didn’t even tag in. They are apparently friends with Nikki and were conflicted about being in the match. I don’t watch Total Divas, so I don’t get all of these dynamics with the ladies. Eva Marie actually got the pinfall.

Winners: Eva Marie and Friends

Cameron came out and attacked Naomi after the match was over. It was a quick strike and then she ran to the back. Will they fight at Battleground? I assume AJ Lee and Paige are already fighting, so will we have another Pay-Per-View with more than one women’s match like we did at Money In The Bank?

ME_93_Photo_018

Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel With Bret Hart

A loud “Y2J” chants welcomes Jericho. The crowd is excited for this. Jericho says that he’s happy to bring the Highlight Reel to Main Event and the WWE Network for the first time…right here in Ottawa. That was a good cheap pop that the crowd ate up. Jericho called Bret Hart one of his idols and a friend, then announced him.

Bret Hart gets a warm reception as he walks to the ring. Bret says that it’s a great day to be back in the capital. He says it’s a great time with the launch of WWE network. He talks about Jericho being in the legendary Dungeon and jokes that Chris tapped out to Bret’s sister. He gives Chris props about his championships. Jericho jokes with him that the crowd tonight wouldn’t be chanting “Y2J” if they saw Bret’s sister. She was a tough chick.

Jericho talks about great matches and asks Bret who some of his greatest rivals were. Bret names Mr. Perfect, his brother Owen, Stone Cold, The Undertaker, and Shawn Michaels as his greatest rivals. To the excitement of everyone, HBK’s music hits and the crowd gets pumped. I get even more excited when we actually get…Damien Sandow!

“You Screwed Bret Chants” sort of took off, which is hilarious. Jericho says that he is so excited that Shawn (Damien, of course) is with them tonight. He tells Shawn that he let himself go. He says that he’s a big, ugly fish with a beard. Shawn then retorted by apologizing that Chris didn’t pay the light bill on his jacket. His jacket wasn’t lit up.

Shawn (Sandow) told Bret that it was because of him that Bret wanted to be a wrestler. He told him that he was his son’s favorite wrestler. He says that after tonight, the world would be talking about the Ottawa screwjob. Sandow gets into Bret’s face and then meets a punch that levels him. Bret then puts the Sharpshooter onto Damien. He celebrates with Jericho to close out the show.

Mitch’s Final Thoughts:

This was one of the better Main Events that I’ve reviewed. The show just felt simpler to process. There’s only an hour to digest, so simple is good. I don’t like it when it feels like there’s way too much crammed into the broadcast.

The opening match was great, but much of that was thanks to the crowd. If they did that same match in front of a dead crowd it wouldn’t have worked. Sheamus and Del Rio benefited for sure. Sheamus is looking strong going into the Intercontinental battle royal at battleground. I’m glad he’s getting to defend his U.S. Championship regularly. I don’t see him winning the IC title at Battleground, but he’ll hit some dudes real stiff in the match and that’s always fun.

The women’s match was okay considering Naomi and Natalya didn’t actually wrestle in the match. The Bella/McMahon story continues as does the Cameron/Natalya story. Both are acceptable to me, so I’m okay with it all.

The Highlight Reel was main event. I was anticipating a Wyatt run-in of some sorts, but that never happened. As much as it saddens me to see Damien do these comedy bits, I think he’s highly entertaining in them all. Tonight was funny. I really hope it leads to something more meaningful for him. I can dream, right?

That’s another show in the books. Let me know what you thought of everything tonight. Is anybody watching that’s taking advantage of the free preview week of the WWE Network? Comment below with your thoughts and opinions and also remember follow me on twitter @MitchNickelson .

Smackdown Review for July 4th, 2014

smackdown

Smackdown comes to us this week from Newark, NJ. WWE World Heavyweight Champion John Cena is filming some movie, so his schedule doesn’t currently allow for appearances on the lesser shows. Sadly, Smackdown is a lesser show. It’s just slightly above Main Event. And since Main Event has the benefit of a live broadcast without piped-in crowd noises, it can actually be a more enjoyable show much of the time. Wow, I’m really dogging Smackdown. I’ll try to be more positive.

The champ isn’t here tonight, but advertised for this show is the return of Y2J himself, Chris Jericho. And here to kick off our Friday night festivities is the current Money In The Bank contract holder, Seth Rollins. Now things are starting to look up!

SD_776_Photo_006

Seth Rollins Promo

There was the predictable interference by Dean Ambrose. Randy Orton and Roman Reigns also interfered. Triple H came out after the brawling and set up a match between Ambrose and Orton for later in the show. Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins are in one of the hottest angles in the company right now, and they deserve it. Roman is the de facto main eventer of the trio, which is a shame because they could do him some justice by developing him a little more.

SD_776_Photo_025

US. Championship Match
Sheamus (c) vs. Alberto Del Rio

The crowd wasn’t really into this. Smackdown crowds usually aren’t too great anyway, but this didn’t really get a response into the final minute or so. These two are two of my favorites and this match itself was good. I’ll even give WWE credit for advertising this match before the show started. They need to do that more often. It can make the matches feel more important.

Del Rio kept trying to put Sheamus in his arm submission and it seemed like he was going to win a few times. He’s a heel, so my wife and I were rooting for Mexico’s greatest export all by our lonesome. The crowd on tv wasn’t with us, at least. Sheamus usually gets booked strong for some reason, so he pulled out the win. I think he used the Cloverleaf, although my memory is a little foggy on that.

Winner and still U.S. Champion: Sheamus

Stardust/Goldust Promo

“What’s in a name? It’s written in the stars.” I’m not sure where this is heading ultimately, but it’s really intriguing. The tag division is weak compared to a year ago, hopefully they have a decent run with this Stardust twist.

Roman Reigns Promo

Roman needs to work on his promo skills. He was real quiet and didn’t show much emotion at all. I guess he’s trying to come off as super-confident and composed, but I have to turn up my volume extra loud because I just can’t hear him.

SD_776_Photo_051

Bo Dallas vs. Diego (w/El Torito)

Bo Dallas dedicated this  match to “little Daniel Bryan”. It looked like there was a botched head-scissors by Diego, but I could be wrong about that.  Bo Dallas scolding Torito after the match was pretty funny. This was a short comedy match. It wasn’t as funny as his antics with R-Truth, but they kept it short enough that it wasn’t that bad.

Winner: Bo Dallas

SD_776_Photo_061

Y2J Promo – Gets Interrupted by Bray, then Miz

Jericho gets the expected interruption from Bray Wyatt, who is amazing. The Miz came out a little later. He’s upset and made his way to the ring. The second he stepped into the ring, Jericho connected with the Code Breaker on him. I kind of like The Miz as a jerk.

SD_776_Photo_082

Big E Brawls With Cesaro

Big E did his preacher-style promo before the match, saying that he’s going to get some revenge for his buddy Kofi. No match really happened here, it was just a straight-up fight. Cesaro and Big E battled really aggressively around the ring. It was a good, tough brawl. Maybe if Cesaro wins the IC title at Battleground then his scuffles with Big E and Kofi will lead to ready-made challengers for his belt. Just an idea.

SD_776_Photo_101

AJ Lee vs. Eva Marie

Paige looked on from a seat near the announce table. This match is not for AJ’s Diva’s Championship. Eva’s offense is terrible. Thankfully, AJ put her in the Black Widow finisher fairly quickly and ended this match. Paige came into the ring afterward and congratulated her without incident. What a great sport, that Paige.

Winner: AJ Lee

The Cold War Heats Up!
Rusev (w/Lana) Make A Mockery Of Sandow; Swagger (w/Zeb Colter) Makes A Patriotic Appearance

The tragedy that is Damien Sandow’s career continues. He doesn’t even get one sentence out before Rusev interrupts him. It’s so depressing. Sandow is better than this. Rusev disposes of him quickly.

This Swagger/Rusev feud is becoming one of the hottest things in WWE right now and it’s all thanks to their managers. Colter and Lana are so fun when they both have microphones. The fans love this and the chants of “U.S.A.” and “We The People” are some of the loudest reactions right now. No fight happened tonight, but it’s early in this rivalry. Let it slow build until Background.

20140703_Large_SDResults_Ambrose_Orton

Dean Ambrose vs. Randy Orton

Mr. Money In The Bank, Seth Rollins, was already mic’d up with JBL and Cole at ringside before this match started. Ambrose has a taped up shoulder, selling his injuries from the MITB ladder match.

My favorite line from Rollins’ announcing stint was, “Oh, don’t be silly, Kane doesn’t wear watches.” You had to be there, I guess.

Ambrose was selling like a champ, really driving the direction of the match as he kept favoring his shoulder. Everything starting going into high gear when Dean charged at Seth and started wailing on him. Seth got thrown into the barricade. He never touched Dean, so the match continued.

The final moments of the match had Orton on the outside and Dean was going to dive through the ropes toward him, but Rollins used his briefcase to slam against his shoulder in the process. The DQ victory went to Ambrose. There was a 2-on-1 situation for a little bit, until the mighty Roman Reigns came to make the save. He Superman punched Orton, then Rollins was able to pull him out of the ring to escape.

Winner: Dean Ambrose

Final Thoughts

The build to Battleground is looking great. Even without John Cena on the show, there are several really intriguing stories going on. The Ambrose/Rollins feud is money and so is Jericho/Wyatt. Jericho and Wyatt haven’t even done much of anything yet and I’m already salivating over what might happen with them. Also, Rusev vs. Swagger is a powder keg waiting to explode. The WWE is really smart to let their managers do all the work at the moment. And with the return of AJ Lee, the Diva’s division has a much-anticipated matchup whenever she and Paige have a proper bout on a big card.

Time for Mitch’s awards of the night…

Match of the Night: Dean Ambrose vs. Randy Orton. Ambrose is so good right now. He was selling his injuries so well and he makes his audience feel his hatred of Seth Rollins. Even though it ended in DQ, this match connected with the audience better than any other fight of the night.

Promo of the Night: The Rhodes Boys. There’s a ton of interest here with the Stardust character and their short segment has my interest piqued to the max.

Superstar of the Night: Dean Ambrose. If this guy keeps it up, people will be calling for his first title reign before his buddy Roman.

Not a bad show tonight. Story-lines were furthered and there were a couple of decent bouts. The opener and the main event were really the only noteworthy matches. But there were a few not-so-great bouts, too (I’m looking at you, Eva Marie). I like what’s being done on the character side of things, but there has to be some strong in-ring action and that was lacking slightly tonight. That’s my only gripe.

Before I go, please head on over to TJRWrestling.com and check out my recent article titled, “A Closer Look At The WWE Intercontinental Title Contenders.” I did a quick analysis of all the guys announced for the over the top battle royal at Battleground. It’s my first column there that’s not a Main Event review and it’s doing fairly well, so I’m excited about it.

Staying on this site, MitchandAl regular contributor Rosie Piper wrote a recent piece directed to none other than Daniel Bryan. It addresses his appearance at Money In The Bank and it’s titled, “Daniel Bryan: Too Crude At MITB?”

Thanks for reading my opinions of this week’s edition of Smackdown. Join me again around Tuesday as we do the same thing for Raw. I’ll be here and the talented Al N. Jaxson just might be my tag team partner, if we’re lucky. These are always better with him, aren’t they?

One last thing, follow me on Twitter @MitchNickelson

Take care, nerds.
