Mitch Nickelson Radio #7: Scott Steiner vs. DDP Commentary (from WCW Greed)

Welcome to the brand new episode of Mitch Nickelson Radio, your weekly fix of the pursuit of the various niche promotions and brands in professional wrestling. This week’s episode features an alternate audio experience for a match many wrestling fans may have never seen before. (I hadn’t.) The match is from WCW Greed and challenger DDP faces off against WCW World Heavyweight Champion Scott Steiner.

This turned out to be the final World title match to occur at a WCW Pay-Per-View and it wasn’t too bad! The Wrestling Observer rated the match at 3.5 stars out of 5, which seemed about right. Another interesting tidbit about the match is that Scott Steiner gets highly physical with a fan mid-way through the bout. While obviously a plant the individual bore a striking resemblance to Paul London. So I did what any fan of the modern era would do and I took my question directly to him…

While Paul doesn’t reply to my question he does favorite it. I’ll take that as an admission that that was him.

Here’s the preview for this week…

Al N Jaxson joins Mitch this week as the two of them discuss and opine over the main event of the last WCW Pay-Per-View ever, Greed. The duo even stumble into something resembling commentary near the end. This is a fun alternate audio experience to accompany the viewing of the match.

Time cues are given during the podcast to sync up the audio and the match can easily be found on the WWE Network. Enjoy!

2014 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 7,300 times in 2014. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 6 trips to carry that many people.

Mitch Nickelson Radio #6: Rory Fox

Welcome to the brand new episode of Mitch Nickelson Radio, your weekly fix of the pursuit of the various niche promotions and brands in professional wrestling. This week’s episode features an interview with a guy that has had the chance to do some pretty cool things in the wrestling business, Rory Fox. I best remember him from an appearance on an MTV documentary a few years back. Others may have heard him on Chris Jericho’s podcast. Regardless, he helped make this one of the best episodes of MNR to date.

Here’s the preview for this week…

Rory Fox joins the program this week as he talks about his recent appearance on Chris Jericho’s Talk Is Jericho podcast (episode #94), his work in 3XW, and his take on current happenings in WWE.

Later in the show, Sgt. Damage and Al Jaxson join Mitch in a panel discussion. The three discuss the best match of 2014, the best superstar of the year, and even offer up predictions for 2015.

Curtis Axel Will Wrestle In NXT

Curtis-Axel-21

As one-half of one my guilty pleasures of pro-wrestling (Rybaxel, baby!), Curtis Axel will always get a little love from me. And since Ryback has returned from injury as a solo act I was getting worried that he might be shelved without The Big Guy.

Luckily for Axel he has found a spot on the best stage WWE has to offer, NXT. Starting around the 1:20 mark, Axel is seen on the following video asking William Regal for a shot on his show.

While this video ends without anything definite announced the rumor is that Curtis will face off against Hideo Itami within the coming weeks. Most likely his spot will be temporary just to put over the younger talent. He might even only work the one match. Titus O’Neil was a main roster guy who did a similar stint recently when he lost to Sami Zayn weeks before R Evolution.

While I won’t hold my breath that this will finally be the start of a run by Axel that will finally click for his career, it certainly doesn’t hurt anything. It is an odd era of pro-wrestling when being moved down to the developmental program can be considered a huge opportunity.

Ryback Is A Class Act On Talk Is Jericho

On this week’s Friday edition of Chris Jericho’s Talk Is Jericho podcast Ryback sat in the hot seat. He took questions from Chris about the harsh recent comments that were made about him from CM Punk and seemed to handle the whole thing like a class act. Here is an excerpt…

“I went and heard part of it. Punk was always good to me when he was here and I felt I was good to him. He was never like that to my face and I felt we always had good matches for the most part on the live events. To leave and say the things he said, I try not to take anything personal anymore. So whatever he’s going through, if he feels the need to say that, I can tell you it’s not true.

It’s one of those things, it’s like, come on man. I don’t understand if it’s a personal thing with me. I don’t know but I have no ill feeling towards the guy, I wish him the best.”

While it is true that CM Punk did suffer very real injuries from these matches with Ryback it also seems like it would be false to label any of The Big Guy’s mistakes as intentional. What do you think? Am I being too kind toward Ryback? Comment below if you’d like to counterpoint me.

Main Event Review for December 16th, 2014

Welcome back to another edition of WWE’s Tuesday night sports entertainment extravaganza, Main Event! Main Event is live on the WWE Network and comes to us from Grand Rapids, Michigan this week. While Smackdown is normally taped on the same night, this week things are changed up slightly as the usual Friday show will air live on USA immediately afterward. I haven’t watched it yet and it might be a couple of days until I get caught up. Byron Saxton and Michael Cole are our announcers.

I watch this show and type a summary of the important events and my thoughts on all of it as I go along. I then wrap everything up at the end in a Final Thoughts section. Let’s get started.

MizTV Interviews Naomi

Have I mentioned that I really like this angle? Miz brings a legitimate level of sliminess to this storyline.  If you took his actions at face value then he is just trying to help out Naomi. But he knows how to deliver every ‘good deed’ in a way that makes you feel like he is one step away from inviting her back to his place for a couch audition.

He tells her on this night that he pulled some strings and got her booked in a Diva’s Championship match later in the night (on Smackdown). He tells her that she might need permission from her husband and that cues Jimmy and his brother to charge into the ring. Miz continues being the creep by saying that he thinks Naomi is talented and wants to see her succeed. “It’s too bad that your husband doesn’t feel the same way.”

Erick Rowan will take on Kane later on the show.

The New Day vs. Tyson Kidd (w/Natalya) & Cesaro

Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods represented their team while Big E gave Natalya his handkerchief on the outside. The over-the-top excitement of New Day seemed like too much in the beginning but the crowd is getting into them. This gimmick might take them farther than I would have guessed.

Cesaro seems to be joining Tyson in his chauvinist antics. At one point, Tyson put Kofi in a Tree of Woe and tried to distract the ref while subtly signaling at Natalya to interfere. She doesn’t, then Tyson screams “What’s wrong with you?!” to his wife on the outside. Then, Cesaro stomped on Kofi’s face while the ref wasn’t looking and yelled “That’s how you do it!” toward Nattie. Poor girl, now she’s getting verbal abuse from Tyson’s buddies as well.

This was the fun, athletic bout you’d hope it would be. Cesaro even busted out his Swing on Kofi and Kidd helped him finish it off by drop-kicking him at the end. It looked really good on the replay. Kofi found himself in distress and the crowd got hyped up for the hot tag to Woods. There were plenty of fun near falls but the ending came after Kofi did a top rope stomp to Tyson, who was being propped up on the knee of Xavier. That was another move that looked great when they replayed it.

Winners by pinfall: New Day

After the match, all three members of New Day celebrated their win in the ring while Natalya tried to give her husband some water on the outside. Cesaro took the water bottle from her and gave it to Tyson himself because apparently she wasn’t doing it right. This was a good match. Go back and watch it if you can.

Roman Reigns will be returning to in-ring action on Smackdown. Dean Ambrose will be having some sort of confrontation with Bray Wyatt as well.

Paige Watches Titus O’Neil Challenge Erick Rowan in Chess

I think I summed up this backstage segment pretty well in the title. Erick Rowan was showing Paige some Bobby Fisher moves and Titus called Erick “swamp booty” before we found out that Titus doesn’t know how to play chess.

Chris Jericho hosted Raw on the previous night and it led to the return of Brock Lesnar. Brock also got involved in the main event between John Cena and Seth Rollins. All of this is replayed at this point during a recap segment. John Cena challenges Brock Lesnar at Royal Rumble for his WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Naomi approaches Miz backstage and tries to apologize for earlier. Miz tells her that her Diva’s Title match is already set up but if she can’t control her husband then all her dreams of Hollywood will go away.

Emma vs. Paige

These two were given more time than I would have guessed. The crowd was a little quiet at times to the point that you could hear some move-calling. Paige would take a few occasions to yell out to the crowd and she was doing fairly well at trying to draw them into the match. There isn’t any story to the two of them wrestling on this night but I guess that sometimes there doesn’t need to be. Paige won by applying her PTO maneuver to Emma.

Winner by submission: Paige

Dean Ambrose and Bray Wyatt will be competing in a Boot Camp match on Wednesday’s Tribute To The Troops special on USA.

Titus O’Neil joins the announce team as Michael tries to joke with him about his lack of chess skills. Titus will be there during the Erick Rowan match.

Erick Rowan vs. Kane

Much of this match was a blur to me because I was way too distracted by the banter between Titus and Michael Cole. Cole kept insulting the intelligence of O’Neil and he would respond by insulting Michael’s announcing skills. I did find it entertaining but it in no way complemented the match. Rowan and Kane were an afterthought to the dialogue.

The action spilled to the outside and Rowan slammed Kane into the announce table. Kane caused a couple of cups that were in front of Titus to fly towards him and soak him. Titus was looking pristine before the drenching and was repulsed by it. He yelled at Rowan that he was going to send him a bill of $5200. Shortly after that, Kane Chokeslammed Rowan in the middle of the ring and successfully pinned him.

Winner by pinfall: Kane

Michael Cole tried to tell Titus about a sale on Amazon regarding a Chess for Dummies book and Titus left the announce table highly irritated. I’m sure Kane and Rowan were also doing stuff.

Mitch’s Final Thoughts

It’s been a week of way more wrestling than normal and I expected Main Event to be more of a chore to watch this week. Surprisingly, I thought it was above average. I love the Miz/Naomi story and I find myself genuinely wanting to root for Jimmy Uso to get the chance to get his hands on Miz.

Tyson Kidd and Cesaro make a good tag team. All three members of New Day are working hard at getting their new stable over. Every person in that match is someone that I hope gets to the next level in WWE. They had the best match on this show.

I won’t overly criticize the announcing from the Kane/Rowan match simply because I like Titus O’Neil and thought he was funny. It is a shame that it distracted so much from the in-ring action but it looks like it’ll lead to an O’Neil match against Erick Rowan. That’s good news for Titus, even if it’s just a Main Event match. He’s not really doing much of anything else at the moment.

That’s all for me this week. Did you like the show? Go ahead and type your thoughts into the Comments section below and I’ll talk with you. Also, check out my recent podcast episode by clicking HERE. I got the chance to chat with Ring of Honor’s Caprice Coleman and Jason Iannone of Cracked.com.

Interview with Caprice Coleman of Ring of Honor

For episode #5 of Mitch Nickelson Radio, Mitch got a chance to chat with Ring of Honor superstar Caprice Coleman. Caprice discusses his personal faith, that fantastic new music video with Omega Sparx, his recent match at ROH Final Battle, and his new comic book project that will release in 2015. Below is the  music video for “More Than A Conqueror,” Caprice’s entrance music…

On being a role model… I believe any time you watch somebody on the screen, whether they want to be or not, they’re a role model…I appreciate that and I do know that people see me as that and all I can do is try to live  my life knowing that. The moves I make aren’t just about me, they involve other people as well.

His entrance music featuring Omega Sparx… I meet a lot of people where I’m at. I ended up running into Omega Sparx who is a Christian rapper in the area and he’s really good. He does raps for different video games that you’re playing and you don’t even know it’s him…I ran into him and was riding around one day and was talking about wrestling. I told him about my new theme song. He asked if I had a theme song and I said yes but it didn’t have words to it. He said would you like words to it? I was like of course!

Writing the hook for “More Than A Conqueror”… So he called me that night and he asked me a couple of things about what’s Caprice Coleman and a couple of my moves. He called me that night and rapped to me and I was blown away with what he had written just that night. He didn’t have a hook yet and the hook that he was going for was cool, but then I was listening to his CD and he had this one line in there that was like “I’m one step bigger than large, I was made to excel.” I was like that’s what I want to be like! So I asked him if he minded if I wrote the hook for the song. I took that ‘made to excel’ thing I kind of made my own thing with it…That’s basically my testimony in that as well that I was made to excel. That’s what I live to do and this is the second chance that I’ve been given in life and I’m going to do my best with it.

The “More Than A Conqueror” music video… I was thinking about doing something cheesy on the camera or whatever, just kind of playing around. But the church I go to now, they are on this Think Big, Dream Big theories and my pastor was talking to me and he knows what I do and he brought it up. He was like, what are you doing now? And I told him about the wrestling and about how I just changed my theme song and I was like we’re going to be doing this music video. I was laughing about it and he was like well why don’t you use the church production crew?…The chemistry there was out of this world and we came up with the music video. That’s what we came out with.

His match at Final Battle with Hanson, Jimmy Jacobs, and Mark Briscoe… (Hanson) is a  bad dude. I really enjoyed that match, even though I didn’t win. But the good thing about that is everybody in that match has been in the business more than 10 years. We’ve been wrestling more than 10 years and trying to make a name for ourselves. Jimmy Jacobs and Mark Briscoe have definitely done that for themselves and like I said I got my break a couple of years ago. But Hanson, he’s somebody that’s been on the indies for a long time just like I was. Not as long as I was but long enough for me to respect where he’s coming from. He has a testimony himself where he broke his back years ago and they told him he’d never walk again, let alone wrestle. So it was an honor to see somebody like him come from his background and to be able to do what he’s doing now.

Goals for 2015… I’m definitely looking at the (Ring of Honor) Television Title now. I’m not oblivious to the Tag Team Titles; Cedric and I are still friends. They’ve put me in the ring with a some of the young guys because I do a lot of mentoring at Ring of Honor, helping them along, tagging with some of them. Of course if I had my choice I’d definitely be still tagging with Cedric but Cedric’s blowing up now. He’s doing phenomenal just like I knew he would.

His upcoming comic book… I’ve been contacted by a local promotion that’s doing comic books and they want to do a big promotion on me and my character to be called The Anointed One. I’m like a vigilante that’s a preacher by day and a vigilante by night that’s saving his church from some dealers coming in trying to destroy it….Derrick Eason, he’s been doing a lot of artwork on that. If you’ve seen any Caprice Coleman shirts that have recently come out – the Sky Splitter shirt or the Caprice Coleman shirt – he did the art for those. The character that he made for The Anointed One is me…It’s kind of like a Nightwing-type look but I have a sword and a different type of outfit of course. But it kind of puts you in the mind of Nightwing but instead of his face it’s my pretty face.

Mitch Nickelson Radio #5: ROH’s Caprice Coleman; Cracked’s Jason Iannone

Welcome to the brand new episode of Mitch Nickelson Radio, your weekly fix of the pursuit of the various niche promotions and brands in sports entertainment. This week’s episode features an interview with one of the best wrestlers on today’s indie scene, Caprice Coleman. He just competed in ROH’s Final Battle Pay-Per-View just over a week ago and I get the chance to chat with him for this week’s episode.

Here’s the preview for this week…

Ring of Honor superstar Caprice Coleman joins the podcast this week to discuss his recent match at Final Battle, his new entrance music with Omega Sparx, and a new comic book (The Anointed One) that is based on him that will be coming out in 2015.

For the second half of the podcast Cracked.com’s Jason Iannone chats about the past week of WWE programming, including TLC and NXT’s R Evolution. Apologies to him for mispronouncing his name in the intro; he still had plenty of great things to say regardless.

WWE TLCS 2014 Quick Picks

Is TLCS the correct abbreviation? Probably not; that just looks odd. But regardless of what letters are the right combination, WWE will be bringing its annual Tables, Ladders, and Chairs (and now Stairs!) event to the city of Cleveland on Sunday, December 14th, 2014.

After an amazing NXT Takeover: R Evolution show took place mere days before, these main roster-ers have a bar before them that has been raised pretty darn high. Will they rise to the occasion? Maybe. There are definitely a few matches that could come together for something magical. I will be tuning in on the WWE Network to see the event.

As far as predictions go, well, that’s what I’m doing right now. Here are my picks with some brief thoughts along with them. I wasn’t too good on my NXT predictions so hopefully I’m a little luckier this time around.

The New Day vs. Gold & Stardust (Pre-Show)

This should be one of the easier calls of the night. New Day will win. I’m still rooting for the Rhodes boys to self-destruct and then they can  get their singles match against each other at Wrestlemania 31.

The Miz & Damien Mizdow (c) vs. The Usos
(WWE Tag Team Championship)

The Miz  & his stunt double have been one of the best things in WWE right now and I’m hoping that they still have legs under their run as tag champs. I like the Naomi stuff mildly as it’s brought out some Jimmy Uso aggression that I’ve not really seen before. But Miz and Mizdow are my picks.

Ryback vs. Kane
(Chairs Match)

While I find The Big Guy highly amusing (especially on social media), I don’t have much hope that this will be entertaining. Maybe they’ll prove me wrong but I’m rooting that the total minutes in this match doesn’t go into double digits. Ryback will win.

Erick Rowan vs. The Big Show
(Stairs Match)

I’m not sure what can be done with Stairs that we haven’t already seen before but since this is a new gimmick match for this event, maybe they’ve been brainstorming extra hard to think up something good. Erick Rowan is the newer singles guy that could use a W against a veteran, so he should win.

Rusev (c) vs. Jack Swagger
(United States Championship)

It’s hard to see this match-up and not point out that it’s a rerun. This was such a great angle from the summer but it’s pretty blah at this point. Rusev wins and Putin stays happy.

Nikki Bella vs. AJ Lee
(Diva’s Championship)

This one does feel like a toss up to me. Depending on if any of those ‘AJ is leaving WWE soon’ rumors are true then that could sway some people’s call in this match. I haven’t been paying attention much to this feud since Nikki won the title so I’m just going to pick Nikki without giving any reasoning behind it.

Intercontinental Champion Luke Harper vs. Dolph Ziggler in a Ladder Match

Luke Harper (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler
(Intercontinental Championship Ladder Match)

THIS is a match to get excited about. Mixing the danger of a ladder with Ziggler’s ability to sell with Harper’s creepy presence might be a recipe for an awesome match. I think that the period between this past Summerslam and the upcoming Wrestlemania could be Dolph Ziggler‘s Intercontinental Championship era, so I’m calling him to win. The Luke Harper reign will just be a roadblock in Dolph’s reign much like Miz’s one night takeaway of the IC strap.

Dean Ambrose vs. Bray Wyatt
(TLC Match)

This is another potential show stealer. Their match last month was just a preview for this match so I’m hoping they go full throttle on this night. The truly sad thing is that one of them has to lose. They’re both young stars who could use a big win like this to establish themselves in the top tier of the company. Dean Ambrose has been selling quite a lot of merchandise lately so I’m picking him to win. That way, WWE can tell their stockholders that they’re interested in the bottom line.

John Cena vs. Seth Rollins
(Tables Match)

I hope the Ambrose/Wyatt match goes on last but this one might instead. There’s a stipulation that if John Cena loses then he’s no longer the #1 Contender to Brock Lesnar’s WWE World Heavyweight Championship. I don’t really care about the stipulation because I don’t believe it. John Cena is perpetually in line for a title shot so even if he loses I can expect him to be back in the hunt within two weeks. I want to be optimistic and all call Seth Rollins to win but I’ll be safe and give the pick to John Cena. Although Randy Orton should be returning and interfering or something.

Well, there are my picks for the shows. I wasn’t as brief as I thought I’d be.

While you’re here feel free to catch up on my most recent episode of Mitch Nickelson Radio. Sgt Damage joined me as we discussed recent UFC happenings. Also, the mind-blowingly hot Rosie Piper helped me make picks for WWE TLC later in the podcast. I don’t remember what I picked on the podcast so I hope I didn’t contradict myself. NXT R Evolution: 3 Quick Highlights

NXT proves over and over again what a quality wrestling show is supposed to look like. If you didn’t watch last night’s R Evolution, do yourself a favor and go watch it now. If you don’t have the WWE Network (and you should, even just to support NXT), then watch for free-but-probably-legally at THIS LINK.

There are a ton of great reviews online, so instead of writing a full recap I’ll simply list a few things I loved from last night. I numbered them but I’m really just writing them as I remember them. Don’t take the order seriously…

1. Finn Balor’s Entrance

I have not seen much of Balor or Itami prior to NXT so I consider the past few weeks to be my initiation to these talented performers. The match was great and did well to put over the news guys in the company. The live audience especially went nuts when Hideo teased the GTS.

But while I might not go back and watch the match again, I’ve already re-watched Balor’s entrance several times. I’ve heard about the elaborate body paintings that he’s done in the past and this was my first exposure to all of that. It was phenomal. I love the creativity and I look forward the next time he does this.

2. Women’s Wrestling is Good!

Not only did the audience chant “This is Awesome” for Charlotte and Sasha Banks, but they also chanted “This is Wrestling” as well. These two were given plenty of time and they put on a traditional pro-wrestling match that I’m hoping both the guys and the girls were taking notes on. Charlotte is the real deal and I’m glad that Hulu cut her loss to Natalya from Raw earlier in the week because I can live in a world were ALL of WWE’s  women’s wrestling sort of makes sense at the moment.

3. Sami Zayn is a Superstar

I think I was the only person calling that Sami would lose at R Evolution and boy was I glad that I was wrong. Not only did he and Neville pump out a match of the year contender but we viewers also get to look forward to Kevin Owens becoming Zayn’s immediate rival. I’m a bad internet wrestling fan and have to admit that I’ve missed much of their independent work. But I look forward to what the future hold because apparently these two can do amazing things.

I only wrote three quick points but the whole show was pretty great. NXT knows how to put on a 2 hour show that matters and I hope that whatever they’re doing right finds a way to trickle up to the main roster.

In the meantime, feel free to catch up on my most recent episode of Mitch Nickelson Radio. Sgt Damage joined me as we discussed recent UFC happenings. Also, the mind-blowingly hot Rosie Piper helped me make picks for WWE TLC later in the podcast.  Bottom line is that you should click PLAY below and listen for yourself…
