Jim Cornette vs. Cowabunga 8/19/93 Highlights (GIFs)

Some wrestling finds are exciting. This match sort of can be described as exciting…sort of.

Apparently,  Jim Cornette once booked himself against a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle knockoff in Smokey Mountain Wrestling way back in 1993 – I was certain that this would be one of those exciting finds. I had no expectations of a technical masterpiece or anything but surely it would be at least humorous, right?

Before passing too much judgment, here is the original match in its entirety. Watch it for yourself if you’d like. Don’t worry, I’ve compiled the .gifs and written out my comments ahead of time, so I’m good if you want to watch the whole thing. Otherwise, keep on scrolling down.

Did you watch it all? It’s okay if not because holy crap, the whole thing is 18 minutes long. Sure, that includes entrances and post-match stuff, but it somehow feels way longer than 18 minutes. Maybe it’s all the hard to hear banter for the first few minutes.

The wrestling’s fairly boring but I can acknowledge that I’m looking at it from 2016 standards. For a 1993 match and considering that Jim Cornette is one of the wrestlers (no offense to him, it’s just that he made his career not as a wrestler), it probably wouldn’t have been so bad at the time. I would’ve been 11 if I watched this one live so I’ll be honest and admit that I probably would’ve thought this match was fantastic if I saw it in person.

Here are some of the best moments of this gem from 23 years ago, with my own snarky comments to accompany the visuals. Enjoy…

Jim Cornette vs. Cowabunga (August 19th, 1993)

There were lots of shenanigans in the early goings here. The two competitors kept taunting each other and delaying any physical contact, like when Cowabunga tunneled under the referee’s legs to startle Jim. Sneaky, sneaky.

scared20cornette_zpseqojf1oa

Okay, the following one IS NOT PG at all. Cornette had his green opponent in a simple side headlock. No worries so far, right? Well, Cowabunga then used only his thumb to escape from Jim’s clutches, inserting it into a very specific orifice. He probably needed to wash his turtle fingers after the match was over.

Cornette did exercise some ring awareness in this matchup, like when he performed this leg sweep to Cowabunga. The turtle took the roughest bump of the match here, landing accordion-style on the mat.

You’ve got to at least give some props to Cornette here. He was bumping and throwing hip tosses and made an actual effort to put on a somewhat serious wrestling match. Well, serious in the sense that you still have to ignore the fact that Jim’s in a red full body spandex outfit grappling a dude in a lime green turtle costume. Not enough attention is given to Jim’s getup – why the all red?

He’s hulking up! Cornette, you’ve done messed up!

This is easily the biggest high spot of the contest. Cowabunga walked the ropes while holding Cornette’s arm a la Undertaker’s Old School, then went all luchador on his opponent with a pretty sweet arm drag.

At this point, Cowabunga took a body slam from Jim and found himself…turtled. Because of course he did. He is a turtle, after all. That shell probably helps absorbs chair shots but it isn’t going to help with his mobility.

That Jim Cornette, he’s the type of guy who doesn’t shy away from putting over the younger talent. That green guy better have shook Jim’s hand and thanked him for doing the favors. Something tells me we haven’t seen the last of Cowabunga!

Final Thoughts

The turtle won. That’s pretty much my conclusion because Jim Cornette wrestling a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle simply is what it is. It’s a strange thing to witness but wrestling’s a subjective artform…or something.

Brie Bella is Frustrated and Wants to Wrestle

Appearing at Indianapolis Comic Con, Brie and Nikki Bella voiced frustrations on how the NXT women are allowed to have lengthy matches and the main roster talent are not. Brie was the most vocal, saying these words…

“I was saying that. If I was in NXT I would not wanna come up to the main roster because you get so much time down there. If you come to the live events you’ll see we get a lot of time at the live events. When it comes to TV we get so frustrated because it’s hard to tell a story in 3 minutes and especially when they want an entrance. We want time to wrestle. Especially after watching NXT Rival pay-per-view and seeing them go 20 minutes, it’s like a dream. It’s something we’d love and we’re trying so hard to get more time. There’s a three hour Raw and you can’t give more time to the Divas? But, hopefully in the future.”

How can a wrestling fan not agree emphatically with this statement? The women on NXT are great and it’s not like the main roster Divas aren’t as good. Well, some of them aren’t but there are some that are loaded with talent. The problem with Raw is that it has to be flagship program forced to blend the diverse tastes of all of the WWE audience. The Diva’s division is an area where hardcore wrestling fans suffer.

Many WWE viewers want women on the screen for the purpose of eye-candy and will gladly tune into the E! Network to see what their favorite wrestler’s girlfriends and wives are up to. Another segment of the WWE Universe, myself included, forgoes the cable contract but still spends 10 bucks a month to watch all the quality wrestling that’s available for consumption. I’ll gladly clear out my schedule to watch the finest women’s wrestling that NXT has to offer.

The two extremes of wrestling fans who want eye-candy and actual wrestling aren’t mutually exclusive, but it sure feels like WWE thinks they are. I’m glad that the Bellas are voicing their frustrations and are not afraid to rock the boat on this issue. Who knows, maybe they’ll get their wish?

5 Crazy Wrestling Event Locations (Video)

Remember that time The Undertaker Tombstoned Triple H onto an escalator? I sure don’t. But according to this recent 5 Things video on WWE’s Youtube channel, it happened. Check this out and see the other strange locations wrestling has occured in.

If you thought an entire episode of Raw emanating from WWE World Headquarters was bizarre, you won’t believe some of the venues we found, including nightclubs, train stations, and an outdoor event that took place during a tropical storm!

Hacksaw Update: Veteran’s Day and Rome (GA) Show

hacksaw jake the snake

Just in case it has been a little too long since the last time you wondered about everybody’s favorite American, here is your regular dose of Duggan. This is the Hacksaw Update!

America observed Veteran’s Day this past week and Jim Duggan made certain to show respect for those who have served. He was already in Charleston, S.C. for a family wedding and decided to give us Yanks a more than healthy teaspoon of patriotism. Enjoy this pic posted to Facebook in all of its glory…

The USS Yorktown participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations, earning 11 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation. Jim Duggan was the winner of the first ever Royal Rumble match in 1988, was a one time United States Heavyweight Champion, and a one time (and the final) World Television Champion. EVERYTHING about this paragraph is more than enough proof that American is great and communism is evil.

Later in the week, Hacksaw would get cultured and visit the splendor and renaissance of Rome (Georgia). He was in town for a Superstars Of Wrestling show and had the chance to meet up with both the past and the future of professional wrestling. Here he is with young stud Tyrus (Brodus Clay from the WWE)…

And here’s a post by Duggan where his good friend Jake Roberts is getting a tad too friendly with him…

That about does it for this edition of the Hacksaw Update. As long as Duggan is still carving out his legacy in professional wrestling and as long as America is still the greatest country on the face of God’s green Earth, expect more from this series in the future. And a smart man wouldn’t bet against Duggan or America.

Hacksaw Update: Hanging Out With The Fonz

It appears that Jim Duggan has joined an incredible group of celebrities this weekend at an event known as the FanBoy Expo. And if this Facebook picture of Hacksaw, Jake Roberts, Tatanka, and The Fonz doesn’t get you excited, possibly nothing on God’s greet Earth ever will…

Hacksaw even shows us his ‘geek’ side as he pauses for a minute to pose with this character from Star Wars…or an anime…or something. I actually don’t know who this guys is supposed to be dressed up as. But who cares? Hacksaw’s thumb is up and America is still #1!

Obviously, Knoxville is the place to be this weekend! Consider yourself lucky if you are a Tennessean but Jim Duggan is the only Ten I’m See-an!
