Al’s Match of the Week: Benoit vs. Jericho (Ladder Match 2001)

Chris Jericho vs Chris Benoit Ladder Match – Royal Rumble 2001

Al N Jaxson here. My match of the week is a classic Ladder Match between Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit. Now I know WWE has all but erased Chris Benoit’s career and for good reason. But for all the fans of Benoit, the WWE Network has any Benoit match you desire to see.

Royal Rumble 2001 was one of my favorites. I had this one on VHS and I wore it out. The rumble itself was fantastic with Stone Cold winning but there was much much more to enjoy on this show. The one match I fell in love with was the Y2J/Benoit Ladder match. These two guys went out and put on one Heck of a Show! Easily one of my favorite ladder matches…no, scratch that…one of my favorite MATCHES of all time. Check it out if you haven’t seen it or if you have, watch it again!

Chris Jericho Hijacks Local Weather Segment

Wrestling legend and real-life rock star Chris Jericho is wrapping up his current run with WWE. His match with Randy Orton at Night Of Champions should be his final bout before he takes another break. This won’t be a complete vacation, though, as he’s merely switching gears and going on tour with his rock group, Fozzy.

While in town with Fozzy, Chris was doing promotion at the local Fox affiliate. Turns out, Y2J really, really, wanted to crash the weather segment. It’s pretty funny and worth a watch, so check it out below…

Fozzy’s newest album, Do You Want To Start A War?, debuted at number 54 on the Billboard 200 chart, the band’s highest album debut. (Blabbermouth.net)

Fozzy will be touring throughout September and October and tour dates can be found by clicking HERE.

Thanks for reading this brief metal news update. That’s not the type of thing that happens too often on this site, but it’s Jericho so I’ll roll with it. Keep up with Mitch by following me on Twitter @MitchNickelson.

Mitch and Al Radio: Night Of Champions Preview

Welcome to another new podcast series, Mitch and Al Radio! Mitch Nickelson (me) and Al N. Jaxson are the two guys who started this site and it’s been a goal of ours from the beginning to get a podcast with the two of us launched. Today, that goal is realized.

Go ahead and click on the player above to start the podcast. The bulk of this episode is spent previewing the upcoming Night of Champions Pay-Per-View. Also, there’s some good trivia about Kamala, so that’s pretty cool as well.

Comment below with your thoughts on this new podcast. If you have questions that you’d like us to answer on future episodes, leave those below as well. We’ll make sure to answer then on air.

Thanks for checking us out and we look forward to doing this again next week! Don’t forget to check out my other podcast, SBP Wrestling, in the meantime. And keep up with all things Mitch through Twitter @MitchNickelson.

Summerslam 2014 – Preview and Predictions

The 27th annual Summerslam comes to us live and on the WWE Network this Sunday, August 17th, 2014. This is the sixth straight year that the event will be in the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Part-time wrestler Brock Lesnar will challenge the seemingly-perpetual champion John Cena in what is considered to be a blockbuster main event.

Rosie Piper and Mitch Nickelson have contributed to this month’s preview article. Each match is analyzed, dissected, and billed to their proper insurance provider. Along with brilliant insight, each writer will proclaim who they believe will win each match. The most punctual writer this month is Rosie, so she’ll get this ball rolling.

John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar
WWE World Heavyweight Championship

Rosie: As far as Lesnar winning, it would give his “I beat the streak” claim some legitimacy. I’d be awfully shocked if they let him beat the Undertaker and then he couldn’t beat Cena. There’s no way I’d believe Cena is a stronger and/or better fighter than Undertaker. And, let’s be fair, nobody wants Cena holding that title any longer. He’s just been a placeholder.

It would make sense if Rollins cashed in and won. It would let Lesnar take his usual “sabbatical”, and could easily continue the Rollins/Ambrose feud (after all, the MITB briefcase would have been Ambrose’s if Kane hadn’t interfered for Rollins) — and it would thrust Ambrose into the main title scene, which the WWE Universe would go nuts over.

Rosie’s Pick: Brock Lesnar

Mitch: The big issue with Lesnar winning at Summerslam is that he’s working on that very limited contract. How do you have a champ that only wrestles four times a year? Paul Heyman is a fantastic mouthpiece for him, but is that smart business? Even with all of the issues of having a part-time wrestler as WWE World Heavyweight Champion, I still think Lesnar will be winning.

I also see Rollins successfully cashing in. Brock is supposed to be wrestling at next month’s event and I think having him challenge against Champion Seth Rollins is one of those Superstar-making matches. Seth can wrestle amazing matches and having a solid 25 minutes with Brock will push him into the top tier of the company. It’s interesting to keep in mind that the original plan was Brock Lesnar challenging Daniel Bryan in the main event of Summerslam, but neck injuries kept that scenario from becoming a reality.

Mitch’s Pick: Brock Lesnar

Stephanie McMahon vs. Brie Bella

Rosie: I really, really want Stephanie to win. I’m no fan of the Authority, but I’m even less of a fan of Brie Bella. Her acting skills are pathetic (I’m pretty sure the only word she can say is a curse word that can be used to describe a female dog), and I’m not a big fan of her in-ring skills, either (then again, I don’t like women’s wrestling in general). I’m pretty tired of listening to her complain to Stephanie (seriously, YOU quit your dang job, Brie. You didn’t get fired. And then you act like you deserve to get it back?), and would love to see the bad guy (or gal) win this time, even if it is an underhanded win. Rumors are floating around about a Nikki/Brie feud, and what better way to close the book on this painfully annoying Stephanie/Brie battle with interference by Nikki which results in Brie’s loss. Then Nikki can complain about how Brie hairflipped and quit, and Nikki had to pay for it without much support from her sister other than an appearance in Florida during which she stole the spotlight for getting slapped (and Nikki still got beat up).

Rosie’s Pick: Stephanie

Mitch: Stephanie is a fantastic heel and has been pulling off the evil boss gimmick well. Brie isn’t too great with her acting abilities, but other than her potty mouth I haven’t minded her. The story has actually been one of the better booked feuds as long as you forget about the dumb ‘cheating’ revelation from Raw this past Monday. I hope there isn’t too much actual wrestling in this match and it’s more of an angle. It’ll probably come across better like that as long it’s only about 8 minutes or so. Let Stephanie win the match as Nikki turns heel, setting up the a Bella vs. Bella match. I’m not sure who wants to see it, but that looks to be the logical direction of all of this.

Mitch’s Pick: Stephanie

Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton

Rosie: Of course Reigns will win. Orton’s good, but he’s already over as a title contender. WWE really wants to push Reigns for some reason, even though he’s pretty limited as a wrestler and might even be worse than Orton on the mic.

Rosie’s Pick: Roman Reigns

Mitch: Jim Ross has been saying over and over on his podcast that Roman will win next year’s Royal Rumble and win his first title at Wrestlemania 31. I’m not as convinced that it’s a sure thing to fantasy book that far in advance, but I do agree that WWE sees him as a future champ and will protect him from momentum-damaging losses in the meantime. (Maybe they should have used that philosophy with Bray Wyatt?) Roman will win over Orton at Summerslam. He has a lot to learn and being in the ring with such a talented guy like Randy Orton will be valuable for him. This has potential to be Roman’s best match yet.

Mitch’s Pick: Roman Reigns

Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins
(Lumberjack Match)

Rosie: I personally consider Ambrose’s win to be a no-brainer. It just makes sense, WWE Universe. This might be because I think Ambrose is one heck of an awesome wrestler (how about that superplex off the ladder during MITB this past year?), and his mic skills are pretty much only matched by Paul Heyman these days. And who doesn’t want to see Ambrose finally give Rollins what he deserves? Of course, it also seems just as easy that Ambrose could lose, thus setting up his inability to interfere when Rollins decides to cash in. This fan wants an Ambrose win. It would set him up to be a big contender for a title shot. But, we’ll see.

Rosie’s Pick: Dean Ambrose

Mitch: I believe Seth Rollins will cash in and win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on Sunday. Before that, I see Dean Ambrose getting a slightly tainted victory after a hard fought battle earlier in the show. This should set up their future matches after a short pause for Seth to have a month of focus on Brock Lesnar. If I’m wrong about the Rollins cash in then this match could go the other way, but I do expect an incredible match by two of the best workers in the WWE right now.

Mitch’s Pick: Dean Ambrose

AJ Lee vs. Paige
(Diva’s Championship)

Rosie: I also consider AJ’s win another no-brainer. She’s the dominant Diva, and it would be stupid to hand the title back over to Paige when they’re just now really starting this Misery-esque feud (let’s hope Paige doesn’t pull out a sledgehammer any time soon).

Rosie’s Pick: AJ Lee

Mitch: While I love Rosie’s Misery comparison (good one!), I disagree that this match is a no-brainer. I find this one pretty hard to call. I am going to go with AJ for the win as well, but I can’t rule Paige out. I’ve yet to see a truly stand-out match between these two and I hope we get one from them on Sunday. They’re capable of it and I hope they deliver.

Mitch’s Pick: AJ Lee

Jack Swagger (w/Zeb Colter) vs. Rusev (w/Lana)
(Flag Match)

Rosie: I used to be a big fan of the Real Americans, but since Cesaro’s departure, I just don’t get as excited to see them as I used to. Zeb’s great and all, but I never really cared much about Swagger. I’m picking Rusev to win this showdown.  I’m not sure who he’d contend with if Swagger beat him this time. I guess they could keep the “Cold War” feud going, but it’s going to get old.

Rosie’s Pick: Rusev

Mitch: I LOVE the idea of the Flag Match. While it is cheesy it should bring some unique responses from the Staples Center. This will give the crowd a nice change of pace and hopefully they “U.S.A.” the crap out of that arena. I’ve become more of a fan of Swagger over the course of this feud and I hope the WWE finds him purpose after this Rusev feud. He could make it his mission to bring the United States Champion back to the waist of a Real American. Like Roman Reigns, I see Rusev still on the beginnings of a career that will hopefully have some main event matches in the near future, so he should win this Sunday. If the feud isn’t over with Swagger, then he might take a loss in a cheap way. And a loss in a Flag Match isn’t really a loss that would tarnish him anyway, so that might work. Actually, that’s a great idea. I just changed my mind while writing this. Swagger wins. He can lose clean next month.

Mitch’s Pick: Swagger

Bray Wyatt vs. Chris Jericho

Rosie: Wyatt needs this win. Cena just about totally buried him after their amazing feud (hey, Creative…BAD idea putting Wyatt up against Cena, who never loses to anyone ever unless he’s planning to be absent). Jericho, while still a fun guy to watch in the squared circle, is a has-been and it just makes sense for him to put over Wyatt. I’ll be a bit sad to see Jericho lose, but I’ll be glad to see Wyatt in a winning position again.

Rosie’s Pick: Bray Wyatt

Mitch: Chris Jericho won clean last month, so this is the most confident pick I’ll make for this show. Jericho puts over talent because he’s awesome, so Bray Wyatt will win. Their match last month wasn’t the show-stealer I was hoping that it would be. Because of that, I see Jericho really coming out guns a-blazing to have that epic match that we know he’s capable of. This is another potential match-of-the-night on a card that’s full of potential greats.

Mitch’s Pick: Bray Wyatt

The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler
(Intercontinental Championship)

Rosie: Ah, Dolph Ziggler. I was just starting to watch wrestling when he cashed in his MITB on Alberto Del Rio (#JusticeForDelRio). That was back when he was with AJ, I believe. He’s always been awfully entertaining to watch (I loved making fun of that goofy butt wiggle he did during his intro…sadly, he doesn’t do it anymore), He’s making a good comeback right now, and I think an IC win would help keep that momentum going. The Miz is a fantastic heel (his win at Battleground gave me the bump to win our group’s fantasy pick game last month), and while I would normally be cheering him to victory, I just have to go with Ziggler this time around. If Ziggler doesn’t win, though, I’m gonna say that The Miz isn’t gonna get a clean win. I personally rooting for Bad New Barrett to make a surprise return!

Rosie’s Pick: Dolph Ziggler

Mitch: Dolph Ziggler is such a great talent and it’s so good to see him in an actual feud right now. It seemed like he’s been in the WWE doghouse for over a year and he’s just now finding his way back into good graces.

The Miz seems rejuvenated as well. The whole “A-List Celebrity” gimmick that he’s embraced has been great. He’s a heel who’s obsessed with protecting his Moneymaker of a face. Similar angles have been done before, but sometimes you don’t need to reinvent the wheel to come up with a winning formula. The Miz thinks he’s a big-time star and that makes him better than everyone else. He’s a coward who will run from a fight if it means that he can protect his pretty face.

I’m not sure if Barrett will be coming back sooner or later, but when he does he’ll be a crowd favorite that will want to reclaim the title that is rightfully his. A heel will be needed in this role, so that’s my logic for why The Miz can hold onto the IC Title a little longer.

Winner: The Miz

So there you have it. The biggest card of the summer is this Sunday and it looks like it could be impressive. Can WWE deliver this time around? We’re crossing our fingers. WWE Battleground 2014 Preview

Battleground will be live this Sunday from Tampa, Florida on the WWE Network! It’s also on Pay-Per-View for those who don’t live in the U.S. or just like paying too much for something. This is looking to be a solid event thanks to a stacked undercard. Mitch Nickelson and Al N. Jaxson are walking through this preview together, so let’s get to it.

Cameron vs. Naomi
(Pre-Show)

Mitch: I’ve come to appreciate Naomi’s in-ring skills. She can put on a great performance with the more talented women’s wrestlers. I wouldn’t put Cameron at the top of the list of talented women’s wrestlers, but she’s got that Alicia Fox style of crazy every now and then so that’s at least something. I hope this is short and Naomi has a serious shot at the Diva’s title in her future.

Mitch’s Pick: Naomi

Al: Naomi is my pick for this one. I’ll be honest I haven’t followed this one as much as I should have but nevertheless I’ll be watching and hoping for some good action.

Al’s Pick: Naomi

Intercontinental Championship Battle Royal

Mitch: There’s been quite a few battle royals in the WWE this year. I won’t list them all, but my pick to win this is the guy that won the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at Wrestlemania, Cesaro. He’s been losing several times to Kofi recently. WWE sometimes will make a guy lose a lot right before they let him win a big match like this, so that’s my reasoning.

Mitch’s Pick: Cesaro

Al: You’ve got to love a good old fashioned battle royal! Look for Kofi Kingston to go for the ooh’s and aah’s as usual

Al’s Pick: Cesaro

AJ Lee vs. Paige
Diva’s Championship

Mitch: I like this feud. I expect these girls to have a pretty good match. Paige seems to be headed for a heel turn, so I expect her to get frustrated by a loss at Battleground to help her along. I’m sure she’ll see championship gold again, but I don’t expect it at Battleground.

Mitch’s Pick: AJ Lee

Al: This one I am looking forward to. These two know how to put on a good wrestling match and it’s good to see AJ back. Although I predict that Paige will take back what is rightfully hers. She will win.

Al’s Pick: Paige

Rusev vs. Jack Swagger

Mitch: If we judge feuds by crowd reactions only, this is the biggest match of the night. Lana and Zeb Colter are extraordinary mouthpieces for their wrestlers and have carried more than their fair share of the weight in this program. While I fully expect Rusev to win, I hope there’s some sort of controversy so they can justify having another match at Summerslam. I really want another month of Lana/Zeb promos!

Winner: Rusev

Al: I certainly hope they give this match the time it deserves. I am enjoying this feud. With the recent situation in Russia I don’t know if they’ll tone Rusev down a bit or not. I guess we’ll see. Swagger wins.

Al’s Pick: Swagger

Usos vs. Luke Harper & Erick Rowan
WWE Tag Team Championship (2 out of 3 Falls)

Mitch: This rivalry has the potential of dragging on too long. What’s kept it fresh is the fact that all four of these men seem to have fantastic chemistry in the ring. The Usos are still two of the most annoying superstars in the WWE to me, so as long as they keep their talking to an absolute  minimal then this could be one of the best parts of the show. All the action after the second fall should be highly exciting.

Mitch’s Pick: Harper & Rowan

Al: This should be a good tag match. These four guys mesh well together and there’s no reason this shouldn’t be entertaining.

Al’s Pick: Harper & Rowan

Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose

Mitch: There are so many well-built matches on this undercard and this is one of them. Since the breakup of The Shield, Roman Reigns became the defacto main-eventer of the three. He’s done an okay job in his spot, but he’s still got some learning to do. Rollins and Ambrose have been gold, though. Rollins is the Money In The Bank contract winner and has to look over his shoulder every step of the way due to the constant thorn in his side, Ambrose. Dean Ambrose is a lunatic that is so fun to watch. They’ve worked hard at making us fans feel like there is absolute hatred between them. This seems like more of a toss-up to me, but I’ll go with Ambrose since Rollins already has that contract from the last Pay-Per-View.

Mitch’s Pick: Dean Ambrose

Al: If this match isn’t a match of the year candidate, I’ll be surprised. these two have a score to settle and look for Ambrose to get the revenge for last Monday night.

Al’s Pick: Dean Ambrose

Chris Jericho vs. Bray Wyatt

Mitch: This is a hard match to pick a winner for. Chris Jericho loves to put over younger talent. It’s what he does. Bray Wyatt spent several Pay-Per-Views losing to John Cena. He’s a rising star that needs a big win. Bray Wyatt will win this feud, but I see this going to Summerslam, at least. If Bray wins at Summerslam, and ultimately the feud in general, why not give Jericho the first big win?

Mitch’s Pick: Chris Jericho

Al: This match will certainly be one to watch, just for the fact that it’s CHRIS STINKIN’ JERICHO!!! this would be a big win for Wyatt and Jericho can do nothing but help the guy. Wyatt wins but barely.

Al’s Pick: Bray Wyatt

John Cena vs. Roman Reigns vs. Kane vs. Randy Orton
World Heavyweight Championship (Fatal 4-Way)

Mitch: This feels like a placeholder until Brock comes back on Monday (or at Battleground) to face off against Cena. That being said, this will need to further existing feuds. Roman will look strong and won’t be the one to take the fall. They’ll plant the seeds for a future bout between him and Cena. Kane and Orton mistrust each other and it’s looking like we might get a match between them two at Summerslam. I imagine that they’ll cost each other the win and one of them will take the fall. I pick Kane to take the fall but I don’t think it matters which of the two does lose, it just won’t be Roman. I expect Rollins to try to cash in his contract and failing, which will set up Paul Heyman’s “Plan C” on Monday night.

Mitch’s Pick: John Cena

Al: This should be a slobberknocker! Don’t be surprised if Cena walks away with the belts. Don’t be surprised if Reigns doesn either. If Orton or Kane walks away with the belts, be surprised.

Al’s Pick: John Cena

Final Thoughts

Mitch: This is the last event until Summerslam so there should be a lot of set up for that show. Many of the undercard matches have had some incredible builds and I expect several bouts to be potential show-stealers.

Watch this show live on the WWE Network at 8pm on Sunday night. Tune in about a half hour earlier if you don’t want to miss the pre-show.

Is The World Heavyweight Title Retired?

RAW_1103_Photo_204

by: Mitch Nickelson

According to rajah.com, WWE might have retired the World Heavyweight Championship last night on Raw. Is that what happened?

Following Monday’s episode of WWE RAW, there’s been a lot of speculation that the “big gold” World Heavyweight championship belt is being retired.

During the opening segment, John Cena did a hard sell for the WWE Network, told fans there’s one major reason to order the Network and held up the WWE Championship belt. Later in the show, after Ric Flair cut a promo, John Cena greeted him on the stage and presented him with the World Heavyweight title. He told Flair to “keep it” and went to the ring with just the WWE Championship belt.

Later in the night, JBL made reference to there being “only one title” now.

flair wcw championship

So, did WWE retire the historic “Big Gold Belt?” Honestly, I didn’t think that was what was happening when I first saw these segments, but now that all of these ‘clues’ have been laid out before me, I think the World Heavyweight Championship might be gone.

The belt was handed off to Ric Flair, because his 16 World Championships were supposed to be represented in that belt. Even though they kind of weren’t. Chris Jericho unified the WCW and WWF titles over a decade ago and technically the current WWE Championship still has that lineage. The big gold belt was later brought out as the World Championship for RAW during the brand extension, but the WWE Champion was never defeated to un-unify the titles. I realize I’m being petty over lineages of fake titles, but darn-it this matters to me!

jericho undisputed

Truthfully, it was silly to have two belts for one champion. Daniel Bryan commented about how he actually wore himself out when he raised both of those belts in celebration. A championship belt is heavy; two are twice as heavy.

The next big of speculation is that the remaining title belt, the one formerly known as the WWE Championship, will be phased out as well. There should be a brand spanking new belt debuting in the coming months that will be the one and  only WWE World Heavyweight Championship. We can expect that new logo to be prominently displayed on it, too.

Once again, thanks for reading the my daily musings from the world of wrestling. Keep up with the world of Mitch and Al by following me (Mitch) on twitter @MitchNickelson . I’ll be watching and reviewing Main Event tonight, expect to see it pop up at TJRWrestling.com sometime tomorrow.  And as always…church on Sunday, Raw on Monday.

Main Event Review for July 8th, 2014

Main Event

Welcome back to Mitch Nickelson’s review of your favorite subscription-exclusive Tuesday night professional wrestling show. I, of course, am Mitch Nickelson. I am always thankful that you would not only watch this show but you would also read my lovely blend of recap and opinion.

This week looks to be another solid hour, as Main Event usually is. Chris Jericho is advertised to be on the show. He’ll be conducting his always-entertaining interview segment, The Highlight Reel. His guest is supposed to be WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart. That’s some star power right there.

Also advertised is a U.S. Championship match between Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio. While it does feel like we’ve had that match more than a few times recently, tonight is guaranteed to be different. Joey Styles announced via Twitter earlier in the day that tonight’s bout will be a Last Man Standing match. It might just get brutal between these two. This is a free preview week for the WWE Network. Maybe the show tonight will be just slightly more special.

Live from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, this is Main Event. Tom Phillips and Byron Saxton are our announcers.

United States Championship Match
Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio
Last Man Standing Match

Sheamus comes out first and grabs a microphone. He says that he won’t need the luck of the Irish to beat Del Rio. When he gets to Battleground, he plans on being the first man since Edge to carry both the Intercontinental and US titles. Del Rio cuts him off from the big screen. Del Rio says that if anyone is going to be unifying the titles, it’ll be him. Sheamus tells him that anything goes tonight, including kendo sticks, chairs, and tables. They both banter and Del Rio finally decides to come out to start this match.

When Del Rio gets announced, he gets a hearty boo. Sheamus gets applauded. The belt is held up as the two start pummeling each other. Sheamus throws Del Rio into a barricade. The ref starts counting and only gets to two. It’d be funny if that was all it took.

Sheamus ripped off the announce table cover and threw it at Del Rio. He did his Rolling Senton to him on the outside. Del Rio finds a kendo stick and wails on Sheamus as they go to a break.

Back from the break and Sheamus looks hurt in the ring. During the break, Del Rio hit his opponent with a diving kendo strike from the top rope. He does it again. He continues to use the stick, driving it into Sheamus’ ribs. He goes for another strike off the top rope, but Sheamus deflects it.

The two trade shots and Sheamus starts to gain the advantage. He hits Del Rio with the Irish Curse Backbreaker. He gets counted up to seven on that. Sheamus grabs the kendo stick and Del Rio begs him not to use it. Sheamus does, however. Several strikes and Del Rio is grounded again. The crowd chants “We want tables” while Del Rio gets another seven count.

Del Rio connects with a big DDT and now Sheamus gets a count. Del Rio kicks him and also goes for a running kick, but finds himself receiving the Ten Beats of the Bowery. It was more like twenty, though. Poor Alberto. He gets counted on the outside and it goes to nine this time. We get another commercial break?

This commercial break is interesting because they’re advertising a Wrestlemania Rewind about CM Punk. I’m sure it was recorded and planned for air before he exited the company, but it’s sure to add to any speculation that might be out there.

Back from the second break in the first 20 minutes and the crowd is still chanting for tables. Sheamus rolls to the outside and grabs himself a chair. Before he can use it, Del Rio cuts him off with a kendo stick. Del Rio sees Sheamus dazed and still holding the chair up. He then does his kick, Van Daminator-style, to a kneeling Sheamus. Does that count as a chair shot to the head? I didn’t think WWE did those anymore.

Del Rio props up the chair into a corner. There’s a little exchange that ends with Del Rio’s knee into Sheamus’ stomach. Del Rio goes for a chair shot but Sheamus stop it with his bare hands. He slams Del Rio, then goes for the Brogue Kick. Del Rio avoids that and hits the Backstabber instead.

Del Rio went for another kick, no chair this time, but got hit with the White Noise instead. They both get counted but Sheamus gets back on his feet at eight. Sheamus finally grabs a table from under the ring and the crowd loves that. He sets it up near the corner.

Del Rio battled back and kicks Sheamus in the head in the corner. Count again that ends at eight. Del Rio attacks and rams his shoulder into the chair on the corner. He applies the cross arm breaker. Sheamus lifts him up by his arm that is still in a submission hold and drops Del Rio through the table he set up earlier. The ref goes for the count and almost counts them both out, but they both get up. Sheamus used his Brogue kick and Del Rio fails to get up after ten. Sheamus is the last man standing.

Winner and Still US Champion: Sheamus

Chris Jericho’s return segment with The Miz and Bray Wyatt is replayed. Tom Phillips said that he has breaking news as they announce that Chris Jericho will face off against Bray Wyatt at Battleground.

Renee Young Interviews Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho says that the WWE is more than just about flashing jackets and surprise returns, it’s about survival. He used the “along came a spider” line about Bray Wyatt and said that he crushes spiders. He talks about Bret Hart being on his Highlight Reel later in the show and says that WWE Main Event will never, ever, be the same again.

There’s a recap of last night’s main event on Raw, with Seth Rollins taking on WWE World Heavyweight Champion John Cena. Lots of interference and an almost cash-in. Good stuff. A graphic is shown for the Fatal 4-Way main event at Battleground.

Nikki Bella vs. Natalya, Naomi, Eva Marie, Cameron, Summer Rae, and Rosa Mendes

This is  a six on one handicap match. Poor Nikki. She looks sad in the ring with ring with her spikey baseball hat. Why is is spikey? She could use it as a weapon, I guess. She probably won’t. It sounded like Natalya got a decent pop, which makes sense because this is in Canada. Cameron wasn’t at ringside, which Tom and Byron point out.

There’s a pretty mean smack that Nikki did on Summer Rae that was worth pointing out. The more talented wrestlers, like Naomi and Natalya, didn’t even tag in. They are apparently friends with Nikki and were conflicted about being in the match. I don’t watch Total Divas, so I don’t get all of these dynamics with the ladies. Eva Marie actually got the pinfall.

Winners: Eva Marie and Friends

Cameron came out and attacked Naomi after the match was over. It was a quick strike and then she ran to the back. Will they fight at Battleground? I assume AJ Lee and Paige are already fighting, so will we have another Pay-Per-View with more than one women’s match like we did at Money In The Bank?

Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel With Bret Hart

A loud “Y2J” chants welcomes Jericho. The crowd is excited for this. Jericho says that he’s happy to bring the Highlight Reel to Main Event and the WWE Network for the first time…right here in Ottawa. That was a good cheap pop that the crowd ate up. Jericho called Bret Hart one of his idols and a friend, then announced him.

Bret Hart gets a warm reception as he walks to the ring. Bret says that it’s a great day to be back in the capital. He says it’s a great time with the launch of WWE network. He talks about Jericho being in the legendary Dungeon and jokes that Chris tapped out to Bret’s sister. He gives Chris props about his championships. Jericho jokes with him that the crowd tonight wouldn’t be chanting “Y2J” if they saw Bret’s sister. She was a tough chick.

Jericho talks about great matches and asks Bret who some of his greatest rivals were. Bret names Mr. Perfect, his brother Owen, Stone Cold, The Undertaker, and Shawn Michaels as his greatest rivals. To the excitement of everyone, HBK’s music hits and the crowd gets pumped. I get even more excited when we actually get…Damien Sandow!

“You Screwed Bret Chants” sort of took off, which is hilarious. Jericho says that he is so excited that Shawn (Damien, of course) is with them tonight. He tells Shawn that he let himself go. He says that he’s a big, ugly fish with a beard. Shawn then retorted by apologizing that Chris didn’t pay the light bill on his jacket. His jacket wasn’t lit up.

Shawn (Sandow) told Bret that it was because of him that Bret wanted to be a wrestler. He told him that he was his son’s favorite wrestler. He says that after tonight, the world would be talking about the Ottawa screwjob. Sandow gets into Bret’s face and then meets a punch that levels him. Bret then puts the Sharpshooter onto Damien. He celebrates with Jericho to close out the show.

Mitch’s Final Thoughts:

This was one of the better Main Events that I’ve reviewed. The show just felt simpler to process. There’s only an hour to digest, so simple is good. I don’t like it when it feels like there’s way too much crammed into the broadcast.

The opening match was great, but much of that was thanks to the crowd. If they did that same match in front of a dead crowd it wouldn’t have worked. Sheamus and Del Rio benefited for sure. Sheamus is looking strong going into the Intercontinental battle royal at battleground. I’m glad he’s getting to defend his U.S. Championship regularly. I don’t see him winning the IC title at Battleground, but he’ll hit some dudes real stiff in the match and that’s always fun.

The women’s match was okay considering Naomi and Natalya didn’t actually wrestle in the match. The Bella/McMahon story continues as does the Cameron/Natalya story. Both are acceptable to me, so I’m okay with it all.

The Highlight Reel was main event. I was anticipating a Wyatt run-in of some sorts, but that never happened. As much as it saddens me to see Damien do these comedy bits, I think he’s highly entertaining in them all. Tonight was funny. I really hope it leads to something more meaningful for him. I can dream, right?

That’s another show in the books. Let me know what you thought of everything tonight. Is anybody watching that’s taking advantage of the free preview week of the WWE Network? Comment below with your thoughts and opinions and also remember follow me on twitter @MitchNickelson .

Thoughts On Raw for July 7th, 2014

raw

Less than two weeks remains until WWE’s next big show, Battleground. Things are taking shape with plans already set for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and the Intercontinental Championship. Lots of exciting returns happened last week, including the always fantastic Chris Jericho. Will Bray and his family continue to be a thorn in his side this week? I’m Mitch Nickelson and I’m hear to recap and opine about the night’s events. Lets get to the show!

(Note: Al N. Jaxson had full intentions of reviewing with Mitch Nickelson this week, but suffered an unfortunate power outage while he was writing his review. If he goes for it again and finishes his review, this post will be update.)

Rollins Opening Promo; Kane Interrupts

Mitch: Raw took a bit of a gamble and let Roman Reigns do a solo promo to start the show. He’s lacking in the vocal arena and it shows a little. He mentioned that the Authority was not there and built up his upcoming title match at Battleground. Kane came out and stared at him from atop the entrance ramp. Roman bad mouthed him and used the B-word on him. There goes the PG rating. Or not, people really don’t hold WWE accountable for those slips and it’s annoying for those of us who’d like to watch with our young children. Also, it feels like letting Roman use a curse word is a substitute for actually developing his personality. If he has heat with Kane, tell the story with plot development.

But the two brawled around the ring and had to be separated by officials from backstage. Finlay was shoving on Roman and got a spear for his efforts.

Harper & Rowan vs. The Usos

Mitch: I was excited to see these two teams fight, because they have great chemistry together and I’m loving this extended rivalry. I’m not excited about the Uso’s entrance, though. That tribal chant into a hip hop doodad still annoys me.

The crowd was really hot for this match. There were several great near-fall attempts and a couple of “This is awesome” chants, which was well deserved. Luke Harper did a massive clothesline on the not-legal Uso for the win. They complained to the ref about that after the fact because he’s apparently racist for thinking that all Samoans look alike. It doesn’t help them that they dress identically. They should wear name tags.

Winners: Luke Harper and Erick Rowan

Kane, Orton, and (sort of) Rollins Have Each Others Backs

Mitch: Randy Orton and Kane are backstage and they affirm that they have each other’s backs. Seth Rollins shows up, MITB briefcase in hand, and says that if either of those two win and Battleground then he’ll think twice about cashing in on them.

RAW_1102_Photo_063

Rusev (w/Lana) vs. RVD

Mitch: I’m glad that Lana’s schtick about Putin works with our Canadian neighbors, too. Zeb Colter challenged Rusev via a pre-taped promo that popped up during this match. He told Rusev to step out from behind his commie skirt and fight Jack Swagger at Battleground. I’m looking forward to that match.

The match was a little slow. RVD is more than the average jobber that Rusev faces, so he got more time. It dragged on a little at time. RVD failed at his Rolling Thunder attempt, which set up Rusev’s kick then Accolade finish. The announcers ask if Rusev will accept Zeb’s challenge. My guess is yes.

Winner: Rusev

RAW_1102_Photo_095

Randy Orton vs. Dean Ambrose

Mitch: Ambrose’s mannerisms are so good. As the match is starting, the smaller and still injured (shoulder) Ambrose taunts Orton like a crazy person. He’s making his gimmick work so well in part because he comes across as fearless.

I like JBL, but when Dean applied the Figure Four he said that it was out of respect to Bret Hart. He then said that Bret won a ton of matches with that submission. Bret Hart used the Sharpshooter, JBL, not the Figure Four. I’m kind of disappointed that no one called him on it either. It made the whole announce team look stupid.

There was a noticeable botch midway through the match. Dean jumped off of the top rope and just landed on his feet, staring at the back of Randy’s head. Randy turned around and the the fight went on. It looked like Dean was expecting Randy to turn around and kick him on landing and Randy just forgot or something.

The match was good, minus my two previous rants. Dean acted like a lunatic and started throwing chairs into the ring at one point. Orton did one of his DDT’s with Ambrose’s feet on the outside barricade. The crowd really appreciated it. Randy Orton hit his RKO for the win.

Winner: Randy Orton

Renee Young Interviews John Cena, Roman Interrupts

Mitch: The crowd immediately booed loudly for the WWE World Heavyweight champion. John talked about having a target on him and that he doesn’t have to be the one to lose at Battleground for his titles to change hands. Roman interrupts and talks way too softly. Not sure what he said. I don’t really want to rewind to find out, really. He’s lucky he does a pretty mean Superman Punch.

Jerry Lawler Introduces Bret Hart, Bret SANDHart Interrupts

Mitch: The last time Jerry Lawler was in Montreal, he suffered a pretty big heart attack. The crowd gave him respect for being back in the ring, healthy. They gave a big ovation for Bret as he made his way to the ring.

Bret said that if he could wrestle one more match, he’d do it in Montreal. Damien Sandow comes out in Bret Hart garb and looks hilarious at it. He makes fun of the screw-job and calls it an elaborate conspiracy and says that Canada is a third world country. He says that Bret regrets never being in the ring with the great Damien Sandow. Bret Hart decks him out of the ring. Funny segment, but I’m still lamenting the disaster that his Damien Sandow’s career.

Renee Young Interviews The Miz

Mitch: I like The Miz’s heel antics. He’s just acting like heel Jericho, which is good. He reads a note from a fan and keeps calling himself a movie star. He doesn’t want anyone to mess up his movie star face. The fan’s name that wrote the letter is named Johnny Russo. Surely the writers were thinking of Vince Russo when they thought up that name. I wonder what the connection might be.

RAW_1102_Photo_168

Chris Jericho vs. The Miz

Mitch: If I had to name my favorite entrance music of any wrestler, ever, I’d probably have to say it’s Jericho’s. I like how The Miz acts so concerned about protecting his movie star face. It gives a dynamic to the match without trying too hard. Jericho popped Miz in the face to set up the Walls of Jericho.

After the match, a sea of cell phone lights lit up the arena. Bray Wyatt was in his rocking chair with a microphone. He told Jericho that he will hold his every word against him. He will never, eeeever, let him forget. Jericho retorted by agreeing that actions speak louder than words. He made his way from the ring toward Bray. Before he could get there, Harper and Rowan joined him and that stopped Jericho cold.

Winner: Chris Jericho

RAW_1102_Photo_193

AJ Lee & Paige vs. The Funkadactyls

Mitch: Paige insisted on introducing her partner, mockingly calling AJ “our” Diva’s champion. Cameron refused a tag from Naomi at one point, continuing their heat. Cameron applied lipstick at one point while Naomi tried to tag out. When she finally tagged out, she did so without using the tag rope. Kudos to Michael Cole for pointed that out. Paige and AJ won when Paige hit her Paige Turner finisher. Those two work well together as a tag team.

Post-match, Naomie and Cameron finally went through with the disintegration of the Funkadactyls. Naomi hits stiff. I felt bad for Cameron for how hard it looked like Naomi was hitting her.

Seth Rollins approaches John Cena Backstage

Mitch: Seth says that their match tonight is about who’s the best. He tells John that his days are numbered. Cena, in a “civilized” way, tells him he’s full of crap. John says that the briefcase is no guarantee that Seth will be champion. The only guarantee that Seth has is that he has a match tonight with a champion.

RAW_1102_Photo_237

John Cena vs. Seth Rollins (Non-Title)

Mitch: John Cena got a ton of boos as he came out. I know that I ton of people dislike Cena and the fact that he’s champ again, but who gets reactions like that? The guy is money, love him or hate him.

The match was lively. The crowd was chanting lots of fun things, like “Fruity Pebbles” and “You Sold Out.” As Cena applied the STF in the middle of the ring, Kane’s music hit. Cena watched as he was coming down the ramp, but Orton came through the crowd and struck him from behind. Disqualification in favor of Cena.

They both were making waste of Cena when Roman Reign’s music started. He came down to the ring and Superman punched Orton and Kane. Rollins took him out from behind with his briefcase. He also took out Cena with his briefcase, too. He realized that he had a chance to cash in and called to the back for a ref to come out.

Referee Charles Robinson ran out. Before Seth could get his title match started, Dean Ambrose came from the crowd to thwart him. They brawled backstage. Cena struck Orton with the AA and Roman hit Kane with a spear. Cena and Roman had a mildly uncomfortable standoff, but chose to raise each other’s hand victoriously instead.

Winner: John Cena

Final Thoughts:

Mitch: I read spoilers that this night of Raw was only so-so, but I really liked it. The Montreal crowd was very lively and that makes everything better. Here are my awards of the show…

Match of the Night: Usos vs. Harper Rowan. Great opener to the show. Sometimes these four seem a little bland because they fight so much, but this was one of those nights where it worked really well.

Promo of the Night: Bray Wyatt. This category almost always goes to Bray Wyatt or Dean Ambrose. I was really feeling Bray’s rocking chair verbal assault on Chris Jericho. This is a feud that I keep looking forward to.

Superstar of the Night: Seth Rollins. Not only was his main event match really good, he had a couple of standout backstage pieces. He placed distrust among his allies, Orton and Kane, and had a solid exchange with Cena before their match. He’s stepping into his bigger role and looking like he belongs there.

Money In The Bank Catchup Part 1

by: Mitch Nickelson

I have a confession to make. I quit watching wrestling in 2005 and did not start watching again until Royal Rumble 2013. After watching pro-wrestling throughout my entire childhood and into my college years, I was pretty burned out on the product. After returning to the wonderful world of people pretending to beat each other up, I realized that there’s been a lot of good stuff that I’ve missed out on. Namely, the Money in the Bank matches.

While I did watch the original MITB match in 2005 and have caught the two from 2013, I’ve missed every single one in between. That’s quite a lot of ladder matches. Thirteen to be exact. So what is a pro-wrestling columnist to do? I’m going to go back and watch every single one. I’ll highlight some of the big moments as I go along and throw in my thoughts on it all.

Care to make this journey with me? This is an ambitious task that I’m going to break up into three parts. So without further rambling, let’s start back at the beginning.

MITB wm 21

1. Wrestlemania 21
Los Angeles. CA
April 3, 2005
Chris Benoit, Edge, Chris Jericho, Shelton Benjamin, Kane, and Christian

This gimmick got off to a hot start. This was a great match with several high spots. It did a very good job of letting each competitor get a chance to shine at some point. While I wasn’t so impressed with the Shelton Benjamin spot where he ran up the leaning ladder for the clothesline during this viewing, I remember at the time it was a defining moment in Benjamin’s singles career. It was such an innovative moment that really helped him stand out.

Shelton-Benjamin ladder GIF

I forget who he did this to, but there was a point a when Benjamin did a running splash into an opponent who was leaning against a ladder in the corner. J.R. rightly called the move a “Stinger Splash.” That was a moment that made my day.

Edge got a ton of boos as he starting climbing the ladder for the win. He was cheered as well when he won, but I really don’t remember the booking of the match. I assume he was a heel at this time.

edge wins MITB

Winner: Edge

280 days after this match, Edge would cash in his title shot against WWE Champion John Cena after Cena successfully completed a title defense inside the brutal Elimination Chamber. Smart move, because Edge won. Good choice of picking your spot.

mitb wm 22

2. Wrestlemania 22
Chicago, Illinois
April 2, 2006
Rob Van Dam, Matt Hardy, Shelton Benjamin, Ric Flair, Finlay, and Bobby Lashley

Looking up the match times on Wikipedia, this is the shortest MITB match ever. While match time is only officially 12:14, they sure do pack a lot of action in such a short amount of time. Shelton Benjamin was staking his claim that this was his match, delivering many of the more memorable spots in the match. He ran up the ladder again this year, but this time he did it in a diving board fashion as he performed a diving senton over the ropes and out of the ring. I also liked the sunset flip over the top of the ladder onto Bobby Lashley. Needing help from Hardy and Finlay to finish the move onto Lashley made for a nice effect.

MITV 2 Shelton Dive

What I like about this gimmick, and in particular this match, is how so many people that really have no right to be in a ladder match can come in and it works. I would have never imagined Ric Flair in a ladder match, but he does a great job in this. He takes a huge bump via suplex by Matt Hardy off of the top of the ladder and has to exit the match due to his injuries. But what a reaction he got when he came back to the arena to finish the match! His presence alone added to this match, but he went above and beyond and took some big spills as well. Finlay was a kind of a waste, but whatever.

Ric-Flair-Superplex

The finish was really fun. RVD could have climbed the ladder after he Frog Splashed Finlay and that would have been a good ending. But just to make it more exciting, Benjamin randomly lands on the other side of RVD’s ladder to try to make a stop. Seriously, was he just hanging out on a helicopter nearby or something? Matt Hardy set up a ladder as well to join in on the fun. RVD pushed them both over when they were battling on the ladder adjacent to him and secured the briefcase to a huge ovation.

MITB RVD win

Winner: RVD

RVD would hold on to his contract for 70 days. He would announce that he would cash in his title shot at ECW One Night Stand against WWE Champion John Cena. While it might seem unwise to telegraph this opportunity like he did, RVD won the title due to interference by Edge.

mitb wm 23

3. Wrestlemania 23
April 7, 2007
Detroit, Michigan
Edge, Jeff Hardy, CM Punk, Mr. Kennedy, King Booker, Finlay, Matt Hardy, and Randy Orton

The first two MITBs were the second match on the card. This one went first. The brand extension was in full effect and that meant that we got a bloated announce team for this match. I really like JBL, but the other five announcers were too cluttered for me.

I always wondered why nobody would run up the ladder really fast at the beginning of these matches. It’s chaos, they might go unnoticed. The opening sequence for this match had a series just like that. Everyone tried to sprint up the ladder for the quick win. Nobody was successful, obviously.

mitb wm 23 jeff hardy

The big bump of the match came with Jeff Hardy leg-dropping Edge through a ladder. Hardy was on a big ladder inside the ring and Edge was laying on a ladder that was laying under the bottom rope out to the barricade. Edge took the brunt of the big fall. He was put on a stretcher and carted backstage. I kind of hoped he’d come back a few minutes later like Flair did in the MITB last year. He didn’t. Wuss.

I was surprised how much people cheered for Hornswoggle. I didn’t mind it now and thought it was a little funny, but I probably would have been annoyed at his involvement if I’d been watching live. He got a big pop from the crowd when he punched Kennedy on the top of the ladder.

KennedyMITB_display_image

Kennedy would win the match, but after holding the contract for 36 days he would put it on the line in a match with Edge and lose. I think there was a legit injury that happened to cause this contract transfer. Edge would cash in against the Undertaker and win the World Heavyweight Championship immediately after the Undertaker finished a steel cage match with Batista and Mark Henry. Edge sure knows how to pick his spots.

MITB wm 24

4. Wrestlemania 24
March 30, 2008
Orlando, Florida
Mr. Kennedy, Chris Jericho, CM Punk, John Morrison, Shelton Benjamin, Carlito, and Montel Vontavious Porter

This ladder match feels like it’s getting crazier and more death-defying every year. The seven guys in this year’s battle do everything they can to make the claim that this is the best MITB so far in the series.

I haven’t seen much of anything of the career of MVP. Even though I think his ring gear is a little goofy, he was good in this match. He was the guy holding the fort in the middle of the ring while everyone went for the ladders. They would have to go through him first. Matt Hardy got a thunderous ovation when he emerged later into the match to rob MVP of the win. I didn’t know much of the back-story with them, but they got a great reaction in that moment.

Shelton Benjamin always makes a good showing and this year he pulled off some spots that were flat-out insane. The sunset flip onto Mr. Kennedy, who was already superplexing John Morrison off of the ladder,  was one of the highlights of the night. Benjamin also put his life on the line when he made that big fall from the top of the ladder in the middle of the ring through the ladder on the outside. The guy really went out of his way to make this gimmick of a match spectacular.

mitb shelton falls

John Morrison also took some big dives. He did a backflip from the top rope to the outside while holding a ladder. That spot looked like he didn’t quite get the distance he had hoped for, but it was still insane. Chris Jericho put him into a brutal looking Walls of Jericho on the top of the ladder as well. That move always looks painful.

mitb wm 24 walls of jericho

Jericho and CM Punk were in the final sequence, battling at the top of the later. They brawled and slammed each other with the briefcase. Punk tripped up Jericho, who was dangling off of his side of the ladder. He was helpless as Punk secured the briefcase for the victory.

mitb wm 24 punk

Winner: CM Punk.

This was the second year in a row that they had two announcers from each brand during this match. It’s just too much. Just pick a team and let them announce the whole match by themselves.

CM Punk held the contract for 92 days before cashing it it. He successfully defeated Edge with the GTS on an episode of Monday Night Raw. Apparently Batista had just beat up Edge, so that was a wise move by the Straight Edge Superstar.

Part 1 Final Thoughts

These were four fantastic ladder matches. It’s no wonder that this gimmick match has become such a huge part of the current landscape of WWE. I don’t know if Chris Jericho gets residuals for this idea or not, but this is a big money draw of a match that could be a staple for years to come just like the Royal Rumble.

I’ll mention a few things that particularly stood out so far. Obviously, Shelton Benjamin has branded himself with this match. So many great spots by that guy. Ric Flair also was a standout. Taking that superplex in the second MITB match was so impressive by the aging legend. Finlay seemed like the most off entrant into these matches, but the moment when Hornswoggle came out with him got a surprisingly big reaction that was amusing. Mr. Kennedy and MVP seemed like two characters that had a ton of potential. I missed their WWE runs and it feels like a shame that they never got a real chance in the top tier.

The gimmick is great and with the world title shot contract, it gives a real reason for all of the competitors to want to be in this match. Fighters risk their lives for the greatest prize in this business and I’m stoked to watch the next few matches in this series.
