Answering WWE’s 5 Point Raw Preview 5/9/16

Omaha, Nebraska is the lucky town to host Raw this week and at this point I’m unaware of any matches announced for the show. Nevertheless, WWE’s got me covered with some of the things I should be expecting in the form of their weekly WWE.com Preview.

I’ve attempted to offer some analysis to WWE’s own questions for the show. You’ll notice that WWE’s questions are in the form of the bolded headings. My opinions are everything else. Let’s get to this…

Will AJ Styles Embrace His Ruthless Side?

Last week’s Raw ended with AJ Styles getting put through an announce table thanks to a Roman Reigns Powerbomb. It was a fun way to close out the show. Considering the two are building towards an “Extreme Rules” match at the upcoming eponymous event, I expect another hardcore interaction between these guys.

I think AJ’s alliances will still be teased as he keeps playing with the emotions of his New Japan buddies. So maybe we don’t get a definitive answer on whether he embraces his ruthless side or not. But if the question was rephrased to include “extreme” in the place of “ruthless,” then yes – I do believe AJ will embrace his extreme side. Maybe Roman will find himself put through an announce table this time around. It is his turn.

Who Deserves To Challenge This Miz?

The three most likely options to this question are Sami Zayn, Cesaro, and Kevin Owens. That’s quite an impressive short list of challengers. Shouldn’t Zack Ryder be on that list as well? Poor guy.

My money is going towards Miz defending against all three of those wrestlers at Extreme Rules. I wouldn’t be upset at all if Zayn and Owens did a second PPV singles match in a row, but since there was a clean loss at Payback a multi-man match this time around feels more likely. My official answer to WWE’s question is “all of the above.”

As a Miz fan, I hope that he survives this onslaught of challengers. I’m eating up the Hollywood ego-overload between he and Maryse, so keep that coming WWE. I will concede that he might not be the best wrestler in the mix here, but he’s still such a great character. Keep that IC strap on him for a long time.

Where Is Dean Ambrose?

Wait, Dean Ambrose has been missing? Wasn’t he just on Raw last week getting his head hit with a potted plant thanks to Chris Jericho? I guess I don’t recall seeing him on SmackDown, but I wouldn’t automatically think someone was missing simply because they miss Thursday night.

The point of this question is to sell the Mitch the Plant strike by Y2J, which is acceptable. If you bust something off someone else’s head, it should mean a potential injury. Even with WWE teasing that he might not be on the show because apparently nobody has seen Dean since the plant attack, I still expect him to get some sort of revenge on Chris.

With the plant out of commission, Ambrose will have to find another talk show item to whack Jericho with and I don’t think his posterboard sign is going to cut it.

Is Charlotte Running Scared?

Charlotte will be defending her WWE Women’s Championship against Natalya at Extreme Rules in a Submission Match. The reason she might be “running scared” is because her 16-time World Champion of a father is banned at ringside. Ric Flair has gotten involved in his daughter’s favor in the past, so of course Charlotte must be a little scared.

Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks have been on the backburner since WrestleMania, which sucks. Don’t get me wrong, I like seeing a talented in-ring performer like Charlotte getting some spotlight, but can’t Sasha be on TV a little more? She’s probably being saved for a SummerSlam title push but surely she’s got unfinished business with Team B.A.D. or something in the meantime.

Will Rusev Devour Kalisto’s ‘Big Heart’?

Rusev won a Battle Royal to determine the new Number One Contender to the U.S. Championship because he looks close enough like Ryback, I assume. Seriously, does Kalisto only fight big, beefy dudes now? I like Rusev, it’s just there’s a specific formula being presented at the moment.

On SmackDown, Kalisto performed a quick but successful strike against The Bulgarian Brute. They could simply do a repeat similar to that angle or maybe Rusev will get the upper hand this time around. Either way, Rusev’s really only in the picture to lose to Kalisto in the end in hopes that he can get the little guy over.

Ric Flair Says “Kill Yourself,” Natalya Plugs WWE Network (Video)

At this week’s Smackdown tapings, The Nature Boy” Ric Flair caused a little bit of controversy with Jim Neidhart’s daughter Bret Hart’s niece when he told her to kill herself. Natalya responded semi-appropriately with a comeback of asking him if he knew about the WWE Network. The video of the exchange is beginning to make the rounds on social media…

Is this something that Ric needs to put on blast over? I don’t think so, but it is good that it’s opening up discussion. Kids who watch might be tempted to repeat this phrase to their peers. If WWE doesn’t have a stated policy on this language then maybe it’s time to inform their on-air talent that this is unacceptable.

It’d be disappointing if Flair was suspended over these comments when all WWE needs to do is edit them out of theTV broadcast. Even if they kept the comments in, as long as the commentary team responded with remarks about how terrible Ric’s words were, then that would probably be fine.

Have any thoughts on Ric Flair telling Natalya to “Kill Yourself?” If so, comment below.

Quick Thoughts On The Three Title Wins At WWE Night Of Champions 2015

Three out of the five titles that were on the line at Night of Champions changed hands. All three winners can be viewed as positive changes for their prestigious titles. Here are a few quick thoughts about the US Championship, the Diva’s Championship, and the Intercontinental Championship.

John Cena Regains His US Championship

Looking back at 2015 so far, one of the bright spots of WWE programming will no doubt be the season of John Cena US Open Challenges on Raw. Since having that mid-card title, it’s become one of the most well-defended belts in all of wrestling. It felt like many NXT alums would go the route of a lengthy US Championship match against Cena on Raw as a way of being properly introduced to the main roster. Even though they were almost always losers to Cena, it’s hard to argue that they weren’t better off for it.

Now that Cena has regained his title, I look forward to him resuming the US Open Challenge matchups. Having the belt off of him for a month not only raised the prestige of the title even more by having it paired alongside the WWE World Heavyweight Championship but it also gave the WWE Universe a chance to take a break from the regularity of defenses. This clearly turned out to be a case of absence making the heart grow fonder.

Charlotte Defeats Nikki Bella To Win Diva’s Championship

A big sigh of relief could be heard in the WWE Universe when Nikki finally broke AJ Lee’s record of longest reign for the Diva’s title. That was the goal of McMahon and Co. and any other competition had to take a back seat to breaking that one record. Once that task was crossed off of the to-do list, Charlotte won the belt about as quickly as she could have.

The match that Nikki lost her belt in was a pretty darn good match. She proved that she can be a dominant force in the ring, even against the imposing Charlotte. She brutalized Charlotte’s leg, targeting the very appendages she uses for his signature submission move.

Even though Sasha Banks has an IronWoman match on NXT to prepare for in the coming weeks, I’m salivating at the thought that she too can be moved into the Diva’s Title picture opposite of Charlotte in the near future. Even the obvious heel turn of Paige is an exciting matchup. Now that Bella doesn’t have to be champ for the purpose of erasing Mrs. CM Punk’s name from the top of the record books, the options are wide open.

Kevin Owens Wins Intercontinental Championship

As a personal mark for The Big Guy, it’s bittersweet to see him drop the Intercontinental Championship. He generally gets a good babyface pop in most arenas and is an overall marketable guy. I saw the writing on the wall that Owens was going to win the strap but sort of hoped that they dragged it out for a few months. Oh well, a Kevin Owens IC Title run is not a bad thing; in fact, it’s a very good thing. (Hi, DDP.)

Owens is still a hot commodity in WWE and has tons of heat that any babyface would love to work opposite of. The IC Championship is seemingly the one belt that hasn’t had the chance to get elevated in 2015 due to an unplanned Daniel Bryan injury, but it’s in great hands now.

Owens has had about as good of a first year into WWE as anyone could have been planned. His run with the NXT title was exciting and then his feud with John Cena will probably go down as WWE’s feud of the year. He’s great in the ring so this a great pairing between him and his new title.

Final Thoughts

This was a tad longer than I planned but I guess I’m just excited about the direction of WWE right now. Sure, there’s negatives if you want to dwell on them but with John Cena, Charlotte, and Kevin Owens carrying three of the gold belts in this company, those are some pretty big positives.

NXT Takeover: R Evolution Predictions

NXT Takeover: R Evolution will be live on the WWE Network this Thursday at 8 p.m. Personally, I’m highly stoked as NXT has been putting on the most consistently good wrestling product today. So to get myself even more hyped about the event, here are my predictions with some brief thoughts about each match. (No Main Event review from me this week since it was all recap stuff.  I’ll get back on that next week.)

NXT Championship
Adrian Neville (c) vs. Sami Zayn
**If Sami Zayn loses, he will leave NXT**

Sami Zayn is way overdue to move up to the main roster. He’s more than ready and with that stipulation about him leaving NXT if he loses, then that seals the deal for me. I won’t be disappointed if he ends up winning the NXT title but I’m calling for Neville to retain.

Mitch’s pick: Adrian Neville

NXT Women’s Championship
Charlotte (c) vs. Sasha Banks

This is another match where I feel that one person is more than ready to move up to the main roster. I can fantasy book a stellar Diva’s division between AJ Lee, Paige, the Bellas, and Charlotte that produces entertaining, athletic, wrestling matches. My call is that Charlotte loses her title so that she can wrestle for the bigger title in the near future.

Mitch’s pick: Sasha Banks

NXT Tag Team Championship
Lucha Dragons (c) vs. The Vaudevillians

This one is a toss-up for me. The Vaudevillians are entertaining and could use a championship run to help establish themselves a little better. The same argument could also be made for the Lucha Dragons; they haven’t been champions for very long and a lengthier title run would do them wonders. I could see this going either way but I’ll pick the team of Aiden English and Simon Gotch because of how funny they are. Maybe this match will have a screwy finish to extend the feud?

Mitch’s pick: The Vaudevillians

Hideo Itami & Finn Balor vs. The Ascension

I am excited for this one. Itami & Balor are new to the brand and hopefully this will be the showcase that’s needed to really put them over to their new audience. I haven’t seen much of Kenta or Devitt before NXT so I’m eager to see what they can do.  There’s no reason for them not to go over The Ascension.

Mitch’s pick: Hideo Itami & Finn Balor

(no pic, sorry Bull and Baron)

Bull Dempsey vs. Baron Corbin

This is the one match I’m not really looking forward to. They’ve been doing super short matches to build this up and nothing makes me want to see either of those guys get more time than they’re getting. Hopefully they can prove me wrong but I’m rooting for Corbin to win in an even quicker time that some of his recent matches.

Mitch’s pick: Baron Corbin

Kevin Owens will also be debuting on this show. I’m hoping they insert him into a big matchup to show his importance. If Zayn loses like I’m predicting (to move up to the main roster) then I’d like to see Owens come out after the match is over and get in Neville’s face to become the next challenger for the NXT Championship.

Lastly, throw in a little Enzo Amore and you’ve got a recipe for a great show.
