The word legend gets thrown around a lot folks so let’s be honest, if you achieve any amount of success nowadays you’re a legend. Well, that’s not how I see it. You’ve got to earn that title. You’ve got to pay your dues and it takes more than just a few years before you’re a “legend” in your field. Michael Jordan is a “legend”. Babe Ruth is a “legend”. “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, ladies and gentlemen, is a ” legend”.
Now we all know Piper is one of the all-time greats on the mic. No one, and I mean no one, got as “rowdy” and down right insane as Piper did in his interviews and promos and with the era of YouTube you can sit for hours and soak in the Piper promos like a sponge. But I want to talk about how he was in the ring. Roddy had some very classic matches in his career and I want to discuss just 5 of his best ones.
1. Bret Hart vs Roddy Piper – Wrestlemania 8 (Intercontinental Championship)
This was, is, and will always be my favorite Roddy Piper match of all time. Did Bret Hart bring out the best in Piper? Perhaps, but Roddy deserves credit in this match as well. It wouldve been the best match on the card easily but I’ll give the Savage – Flair match a slight edge. But folks if you haven’t seen this one, SEE IT! I won’t tell you who wins either so it’ll be even more fun. See how nice I am?
2. Greg the Hammer Valentine vs Roddy Piper – Starrcade 83 (Dog Coller Match)
Brutal, Violent, and just plain vicious. This match was a bloody massacre. I watched this about a month ago and realized why so many fans are still talking about that match. Piper was victorious in the match after whipping Valentine with the steel chain. If you haven’t seen Roddys WWE DVD release Born to Controversy, please pick it up. He goes into great detail about this match. A true classic between two of the greats.
3. Roddy Piper vs. Goldust – Wrestlemania 12 (Hollywood Backlot Brawl)
This one was……interesting. It was supposed to be Razor Ramon vs Goldust but that didn’t happen so Piper took on The Bizarre One. This one started in the backlot with an all out brawl involving cars, dumpsters, trash cans…you name it. Then on to a high speed car chase parodying the OJ Simpson chase. Then eventually they found themselves in a WWE ring where Piper proceeded to rip off Goldusts clothes, blah blah blah, right? Bottom line is, Piper was at the decline of his career at this point but was still able to stir up controversy and get an enormous pop from the crowd. He’s Roddy Piper for crying out loud!!!!!
4. Roddy Piper vs. The Mountie – Royal Rumble 1992 (Intercontinental Championship)
This match is special to Hot Rods career because it was the first time Piper tasted championship gold. (Hard to believe it took that long, right?) The match, for what it was worth, wasn’t that bad. Heck, I liked the Mountie character. Check out the fan reaction to Piper winning the IC Title. Good stuff.
5. Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff vs. Hulk Hogan and Mr. T. – Wrestlemania 1
Piper was there from the beginning, and at this time in his career, he was at his best. Roddy Piper could get heat like no one else could, and he just didn’t care. I think he loved being a heel. How can you be such a jerk and have that smile and that attitude and not love it? There aren’t very many heels in my opinion that come close to touching Piper, but a couple are Shawn Michaels and Triple H. People hate them. Not their character, they hate them as a human being. And I’m talking HBK circa 1998 when he was a gigantic jerk. We all know Wrestlemania 1 needed Piper to make it work. Perhaps more than Hogan.
Well, there ya have it. 5 reasons why Hot Rod is, you guessed it, a legend!
